What I'm Reading This Week #27

Happy Friday everyone!   I hope you've got the day off to enjoy.  I would really appreciate the weather dialing it back from Satan's taint to dryish heat please.  I'm not even asking for much.  Like 83 degrees would make me happy at this point but there's no end in sight to the 90's.  The Mr and I have both been plagued with migraines this week.  He had a two day event and I had an ocular migraine which is just so crappy to deal with since you can't read or do anything until your vision isn't screwed up.   I got to wait on hold for an hour Tuesday with the state tax department so I decided to sand and prime the newel post while listening to hold music designed to make you hang up.  To quote Bugs Bunny "he don't know me vewy well, do he?"  I got that squared away and later went out between pop up storms to deadhead some zinnias which you may have seen in Wednesday's post.   Speaking of Wednesday, it was a busy day in the ga...

Bliss by Mail

Sometimes you fall in love with something that isn't available in your city.  This happens to us on vacation quite a bit and when we try to replicate it at home it just doesn't cut it.  So you have to go to the source.  Soup is something I have pretty much cut out because the sodium is ridiculous.  I just can't afford thousands of milligrams of sodium.  But there is once or twice a year I make an exception.  I got us a surprise when I saw a favorite bakery had a sale going on and it arrived last week.  It's my bliss in a box...


I'm not a bread bowl kind of gal but I must say when it's from Boudin Bakery in San Francisco, I am all over that shizz.  If I lived in the city by the bay, I would gain those 200 pounds back pounding down Kara's fleur de sel cupcakes, Paxti's Deep Dish Pizza (which puts every Chicago pizza to shame) and clam chowder mustaches after devouring this deliciousness.


Sodium gets thrown out the door when you have something this heavenly in your midst.


I was able to enjoy it last Sunday before my sense of smell took leave.  Sometimes you just have to go for it and enjoy those little treats that you can't get anywhere else except when the FedEx guy begrudgingly hands over what he knows is something good.  Wanna bite?


The Mr is enjoying some homemade sourdough croutons I made from the innards and I only ate half of my top.  I had a picture of them but totally deleted them by mistake.  Idiota.  I tore them into big pieces, sprayed them with olive oil and sprinkled them with garlic powder and italian seasoning.  The gift that keeps on giving.

What's your favorite food/treat that you splurge to order by mail?  If you don't, what food would you order if money were no object?

    I cannot imagine any food I would want to order by mail. These look delicious. Some day I will come up with the energy to make my own, I love baking bread. (Oh! Oh! Oh! Now that I am not low-carbing anymore, I can bake bread again! Wheeeee!!!)

    I don't order food by mail, mainly because PA is a bit strict about what comes in and out sometimes.

    If I could order anything and it wouldn't spoil...I'd get the fish and chips from this little shop around the corner from where I used to live in England. It was no wonder that I was at my heaviest when I lived there (despite walking everywhere).

    I'd also want to order a pizza and gelato from Italy so I can't figure out what everyone's raving about.

    I make a decent seafood chowder. If you'd like the recipe, I can try and remember to write it down next time I make it. If not, no big deal.

    That looks fantastic! Except the clams part. yuck. I would totally put my hubby's potato soup in that bowl though.

    I don't mail order food - but there is a pizza place and a Mongolian Grill in "the city" about an hour away that we tend to hit every chance we get.

    It looks simply scrumptious! We took a family trip (3 kids) to California in 1989. Went to San Francisco and loved the sourdough bread and clam chowder, but I never thought about ordering it on-line! GREAT idea. Now I've got to get that thought out of my head!

    Epilog to Cali Trip: Had to buy a new car in Las Vegas on the way home, as our 1977 Ford LTD conked out. We got a brand new 1989 Thunderbird and by the time my son was done driving it in 2004, it had over 200,000 miles on it. My boys will NEVER forget that vacation.

    I've ordered Lamme's Texas Chewie Pralines, absolutely to die for and unavailable in Alaska, but not very often. As far as gourmet foods, never have done that but that bread looks delicious!

    Hmmm... new and unexplored worlds... I had no clue one could just order food. I live in a small world, LOL! My friend did laugh at me this past November, though... we were at an authentic country craft fair at a racetrack (think British, with Chestnuts roasting on open fires), and never mind the handicrafts, I bought food kits for authnetic Thai curry... the smell was exactly like that from a restaurant I frequented years ago... been missing that stuff since it closed. I made my first batch on Monday... YUM!!! And I'm now learning to make the real deal! Thanks for the 'inspiration' - now I'll be trolling websites for lunch, LOL!

    I don't order food online, either. I'm afraid I'll be disappointed because the cost is so high and I like my own cooking. (I like it about 95 lbs. worth, lol.)

    Let's see...no, I can't think of anything that has tempted me that much.

    So, what's to keep you from making your own soup without all that sodium?

    Cheri- It's not about the soup, it's about the bread. Boudin is THE best sourdough in the world and if I have clam chowder once or twice a year, why not have it in the best bread bowl I can buy. As far as making it? Pssht. Even I have my limits on homemade vs convenience for the once a year indulgence. I cook almost every single meal we eat. Mama needs a break! LOL

    Ohhhh! That sourdough. If only I could reach through the computer screen and grab it. SO! HUNGRY!

    There are two foods I order by mail: Japanese candy from NapaJapan and truffles from Vosges. Totally worth it. :)

    I've never seen soup in a bread bowl. Not sure I'd like it, but I'm not much for bread. My Irishman, however, is over my shoulder, drooling. lol
