Thanksgiving dinner, outlet malls and blasts from the past

Saturday we were going to head to the outlet mall.  We hadn't been there in like 10 years or something like that.  But I also knew they had crappy chain restaurants there and I was craving Thanksgiving dinner like crazy.  (It happens about the first day of Fall every year, I get an overwhelming craving for Thanksgiving dinner that cannot wait until the end of November)  So I hopped on Yelp and saw a couple of restaurants that offered it regularly and off we went.

It was okay.  It tasted very canned/boxed and it's just not the same as homemade.  I could make it 100x better but Saturday is the only day I get off from cooking so I need it big time.  It'll tide me over until then though even if it was meh.

It was off to the outlet mall.  We wandered from store to store and I picked up some rock salt for my new ice cream maker since it was on sale for $2.50.  I picked up a Christmas gift for my friend.  Then we went into Calvin Klein I think and I was waiting for the Mr to come out from the dressing room and just ahead of him was a guy I went to high school with.  My mouth dropped and I pointed at him because I could see he was looking at me like "is that who I think it is?" and we hugged and caught up for a couple of minutes.  We have a mutual friend and I've seen him on her FB page but I haven't been in person with him for well over a decade.  It's so funny how someone can ask you "what have you been up to since high school?" and you feel like "uhhhh...."  I told him I was a photographer that worked from home.  Not a lie, I take pics!  But it's not the kind of thing you announce..."I have a weight loss blog because while I look about the same to you, I've actually lost 213 lbs from my highest weight.  So what have YOU been up to?"  All I could think of after thinking to myself I just had to dress for comfort in jeans and a Carmel-by-the-Sea t-shirt, my hormonal pubescent connect the dots on my forehead and wind blown hair was "thank God he didn't see me 200 lbs ago!"  There might be another blog about the feelings it brought up later in the week.

I went to Coldwater Creek to try on a few things:

I bought the first one, the second one looked hideous, the 3rd one didn't fit right but of course they didn't have my size and the 4th one I should've bought but didn't and saw they don't have it on their website so I'm ticked because I felt like a luxurious wench in it.  I've never gone into Coldwater Creek because I always assumed they didn't carry big mama clothes.  Now that I'm marginally in XL's depending on the store, I go into these places and see they carry 2 and sometimes 3xs!!  Rat bastards!  So learn from my mistake, unless they look like they're dressing a teenager, take a peek inside...it's not always a Julia Roberts on Rodeo Drive pre-makeover moment waiting to happen.  Anyhoo...we walked around the outlets for about 4 hours or until our feet throbbed off in pain, I can't remember which came first.

After dinner, we went out and I finished off my friend's Christmas stuff and we picked up a few things we needed including an over the door coat rack.  Do you think it fit over the door leading to the garage where I needed it to go??  Nope.  Grrrr.  So it'll go back this week and we'll get 2 wall mounted ones and spend twice the amount.  *hiss*

Yesterday I started out the first full day of Fall (and the Mr's first big project of the "work" week) with a big breakfast.

I used the last of my Trader Joe's pumpkin pancake mix to welcome Fall.  I also made 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon and a side of maple and coconut syrup.  I am SOOO excited for this time of year and everything it brings.  I'm so tired of people griping and groaning about Fall.  You had your summer, now it's time for the rest of us to revel in our season.  Summer is overrated and HOT.  I don't care how thin I get, I will never be a fan of summer.  Bring on pumpkin everything, fuzzy socks, cozy sweatshirts, mediocre college football, gorgeous changing leaves and Trader Joe, you'd better be pumping out that Spiced Cider PRONTO!

While the Mr worked, I worked on a few of his birthday projects he could see and I'm glad to get them crossed off the list so I can start working on some other stuff.  I'm feeling the pressure coming down on me since we're moving into the last full week of September.  Where is this year going?!

What did you do this weekend?  What's your favorite thing about Fall?

  2. Testify! Summer (and winter) are one note seasons. Fall (and spring) are where it's at (though I prefer fall to spring--spring is too muddy at times).

The temperature and PUMPKIN are the best things about fall. I love that it's cool (to cold) at night so I can pile on the blankets and make a bed nest. Then it gets to about 70 during the day, warm but not hot. And pumpkin? Yeah, it's just awesome.

    1. I love Fall and Winter (by February I'm over it though. HA!) But yes, I love Fall and Spring as well and I don't mind the rain because we seem to skip Spring the past decade. I hate going from cold winter to sweltering heat. I'm a 72 degree is my perfect temp girl and I don't get to enjoy it that long.

Time to break out the pumpkin!

  3. Too funny - hubby made us a mini-Thanksgiving yesterday. We always buy an extra turkey around Thanksgiving when one of the stores here offers a great sale. He cooked it up yesterday and we did the whole mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing... "thing". Now to look forward to to turkey everything this week.

Saturday was a kids event that I wasn't looking forward to, but it turned out to be really cool. Plus they had funnel cake for $3 so I got what I've been denying myself the last few years at the fair (at $8 each, it better be served with powdered gold). Yesterday was a mess of running around, cooking, and trying to get ready for the week.

    1. HA! Glad I'm not the only one. I wish we had room for a freezer in the garage so we could stock up on some extra turkeys throughout the year. I don't understand why there is only good prices on turkeys around Thanksgiving.

Glad your kids event went better than expected and you indulged a little bit!

    1. Do yourself a solid and make your own Thanksgiving dinner. It's just not as good if it isn't. Ugh, if that color is making a comeback, I'll sit that one out!

  5. Went to the grocery store Friday and imbibed on a few samples. I love to sample stuff there, cause then you get a taste but are not saddled with tempting leftovers like you are if you buy an entire box or bag of something. Friday I had a little tiny cup of Pepsi Next (delicious!--but not worth 50 calories or whatever it is per serving), and 3 Cheetos--one of the big puffed ones and two skinny ones with some new flavor on them. I grabbed them and said, "It's been a long time since I had a Cheeto!" It was delicious. I used to devour them by the bag! Especially those big puffy ones. So hopefully I got that out of my system!

Fall is the BEST--I love everything--but especially the colors of the changing trees and the crisp Fall afternoons. Sometimes I walk out after work and all of a sudden realize how gorgeous it is outside after being cooped up inside all day. (ONLY 3 MORE MONTHS!) And I think to myself, "This is what makes all those horribly cold and horribly hot Nebraska days worth living here for--just ONE of these beautiful Fall afternoons!"

  6. P.S. Love both the black blouses--you definitely should have gotten that other one too. Maybe you can grab it next weekend when you take your non-fitting coat hanger back???

  7. Coldwater Creek has awesome clothes!!! I am a total jacket whore!! You can get great deals on their online outlet :)

  8. Love Coldwater Creek!!

I don't love fall as much as you do (I go into the season kicking and screaming) but once I've adjusted to it, it's a pretty nice season! I took a wonderful hike in the woods yesterday and made my peace with Autumn. I just miss having my windows open and I'm definitely not turning on the furnace yet (although that's a pretty iffy decision this morning.)

    Enjoy the day!

  9. I LOVE fall. I always have. Partly because my birthday is this week and partly because it always feels like new beginnings. I love summer because its fun but I am over the heat!!! Bring join warm 8 degree days that gradually get cooler, the smells, the food...oh yeah love me some fall!!!

  10. I absolutely ADORE Fall. We were married September 30th, 17 years next Sunday!
Love your taste in clothes; those tops were all beauties - sorry they weren't quite right.
I was called in for a three-hour stint at my "until I get my real job" job, and those three turned into an eight-hour shift. Psyched, because of the hours, but really bummed that I had no food with me. Vending hell!! Sucked, because I had to have something AND the machine is in desperate need of a refill so the choices were gross. (bitch-whine-moan) Yesterday, I was the assistant to my balloon artist-on-the-weekends hubbie, collecting the money while he twisted up the balloon animals. yes, complete with a gratuitous scream at each occasional POP! The gig was at a local all-year flea market, in beautiful weather. Downside was that he set up across from a retro candy booth. Sigh. NEXt weekend will be fun; two days of a real Fall Harvest Festival at a farm - hay-rides, tractor pulls, apple crisp, cider donuts, face-painting - hey, keeping the wolves from the door, yanno?

  11. I always forget about Coldwater Creek when I'm clothes shopping. Love that first top, especially!

Had to LOL at the reunion in the store. I experienced a similar situation when I was at my recent junior high reunion. Fortunately, after the first 2 or 3 encounters, I became quite practiced at saying, "Oh, I'm a writer, and a freelance small business consultant." I didn't feel it necessary to add that I have to raid my savings account every month to pay the bills. :)

Exactly. Weird because if you say you're a blogger, they roll their eyes like it's not a real job.

  12. Love the top you got, sorry the other one was left at the store. I wouldn't buy the color of the one you said was hideous if it were the last scrap of fabric left on earth.

I'm a fall-lover, too. What were we thinking, heading for Cancun during hurricane season, just when the weather here is so gorgeous? Oh, that's right...we were thinking DH's teeth needed to be fixed sooner rather than later.

I've started telling people I'm happily retired, though the 'happily' part is a stretch, hehehe.

  13. Hooray for another fall lover! While I enjoy summer, I love fall - the changing of the color of the leaves, the brisk air, and warm fuzzy socks. :D

Definitely need to pick up some pumpkin soon though!

  14. OK, new rule: Anything that makes you feel like "a luxurious wench" must be purchased immediately. Really, how often does that happen?

  15. I looooove Fall. I wish it would last longer. I love everything about it - the temperature, the rain, the leaves, hoodies, fuzzy socks, pumpkins, apples, cider, Halloween, the waning daylight - it's just absolutely perfect.

Since this summer was beyond ridiculous in terms of length, sun, heat, and drought, I think we're owed an extra-long Fall.

    1. I'm with you...bring on the extra long Fall except the week before Christmas, I want SNOW this year for Christmas dammit!

  18. Here in California everyone I know is complaining because summer refuses to leave. The guest who came for dinner and stayed a month. I WANT FALL *like a three year-old who wants a toy-foot stomp. So ready for cool weather. My FAVORITE season, no contest. The pancakes look AWESOME. Tried pumpkin pancakes for the first time last year, so yummy!! With just a touch of pumpkin spiced whipped cream....I need to drive somewhere cold right now-lol. Maybe I can settle for pointing all the fans my way...pumpkin is in the cupboard...think I can get away with it-lol :).

  19. I love that first black top--good for dressing up OR down as they say. :) I really need to hit up the outlet mall here. It's been a year since we've gone there!

I never know what to tell people my job is either. And you know, it's always when you're out in your lazy clothes & not wearing makeup that you see people you know. It's a given!

    1. You know it! I'm gonna be a sexy beast in it. (I hope) Sooo true! I had my hair up in a ponytail and gross after a workout one night and we ran up to the store and ran into the Mr's old high school crush. Keep in mind he went to high school 2 hours away so that should have only happened in a parallel universe. Thank God I ran so she didn't see me and he didn't have to explain "she usually looks better!"

  20. Mmmmm Pumpkin!! My yesterday included the baking of pumpkin muffins. I swear I've never tasted anything better. Now I have all these different variations in my head (none of which are diet friendly), all will probably be tried since it takes longer to bake them than it does to prepare them or clean up.
