In case ya didn't know

So I about fell over when I casually mentioned to a friend I was happy to get cash back on my latest Sur La Table purchase.  When she asked how, I assumed she knew about Ebates (affiliate link) and when there was a blank glaze, I knew I had to enlighten her.  I'll do the same for you in case there are others who are not aware of how to get free money back from websites you already shop.

No this isn't a scam (trust me, I was skeptical at first too.)  I'm not in cahoots with Ebates, but $150 of my own money back over the years by just visiting Ebates before I go to the website I was going to shop anyway is enough for me to tell others!  Isn't money better off in your pocket than theirs?

So all I did was went to their website, signed up with my email (I think they give you some bonus card too when you sign up.  I'm not sure how that works.)  Then you just do a search for a store you were going to shop online to see if they are part of the program.  I was actually a bit shocked how many stores were.  You can just go to the top and start to enter a store and if it participates, it will show up and the amount of cash back you'll get.

If you enter a store and it doesn't participate, it either won't pop up or it'll tell you there's no discount.

(Curse you Pottery Barn!)

More than a few times a year, many stores will double their cash back like a few did for the July 4th holiday.

(Just a sampling of a few of the stores that doubled their cash back)

One of my favorite cash backs was getting $34 back from Budget Rental Car on a trip because it felt like we got a tank of gas for close to free.  I like to look up rental car companies by entering the word rental and all of the companies come up and you can see who gives the best rates.

(Then I make my final decision based on reviews)  I was pleased when I booked some interisland airfare on Hawaiian's site and got 1% back.  It's not a huge amount of money but any amount back is better than nothing in my book.

They will send you a monthly email with your pending cash back or you can check your dashboard to see your balance.

You can always hop over there and peruse the shop to see what stores participate and if it'd be worth signing up for.

They add new stores too so I personally think it's worth it signing up.  If you haven't given Ebates a try, give it a shot and put some of that green back into your pocket!

Do you already use Ebates when you shop?  If so, have you gotten a goodly amount back?

  1. I know you've used this quite a few times now and it really is just giving us some of our money back so it's a no brainer. Might as well save any where and any way you can so this makes sense and is definitely legit. Great find!

    1. Yes it has. I'll take the $150+ now I've earned over nothing. :-)

  2. I imagine though that all your activity on the site and your spending habits and demographic information are data mined and used to help companies market their products. So if you are like me and have a low tolerance for this type of corporate practice it's not worth the savings. I do what I can to mess up corporate attempts make me buy heir products using subliminal messaging and behavioral conditioning.

    1. Ebates specifically states they don't sell your information on their site, just like your grocery store or ANY store, mortgage company, banks, etc states in their terms. They are an affiliate program with these stores which means they get a small commission for referring people to their sites and split that commission with you. I have not received a single piece of extra spam since I signed up with them 5 years ago, they don't have my phone number or a main email address for me.

Anything that basically doesn't require you to weave your own clothes, grow your own food and build your own house out of things found in nature, your data is at risk of being sold. I get more info sold from my grocery store and bank. It's all about being careful with the info you give people.

  3. I love ebates and after 3-4 years, my total back is >$500 (thanks to a couple big work-related purchase). The latest deal was 40% rebate from magazines.com where they were also having a special group of subscriptions for $5/year (which ended up costing $3/year after the rebate). You just need to get into a routine of checking the site first and can easily save $$.

    1. Wow! That's some good money back there! I cannot BELIEVE how expensive magazines have gotten. I went to pick up some mag the other day and it was $14!!! It wasn't even that thick and $5 more is what I'm used to paying for a year's subscription. I may have to give that a gander! That was always my problem, remembering after the fact. I'm trying to get better! :-)

  4. My mom started me with using Ebates. I do a lot of online shopping. I hate when I forget to go through Ebates. A couple of days ago, I placed an order on Amazon without going through my Ebates account. For the first time, I cancelled the order and placed it again going through Ebates. It is awesome!
