Labor Day Weekend Recap
How do? It's the start of a new month again.
I have to say, decorating for Fall early this year was absolutely the right thing to do. I want to say I put stuff up August 12th-ish and not only did it put me in a better mood but I usually decorate early September and then it feels like a deadline. Having all of this up was calming in the blazing heat and humidity and gave me something to look forward to.
The Mr and I had our birthday celebration Saturday. I had him pick up my favorite cupcakes and it's the first year we didn't have an actual cake which felt weird and kind of sad. I grew up on grocery store cakes with overly sweet frosting and roses or balloons on the edges. Sadly since everything is off-site and shipped into stores now, they are as dry as the desert no matter where we try to get them. Even Mom and Pop bakeries have the same problem. I really don't want to bake my own cake so cupcakes it is and they looked like they hit it out of the park.
I was lamenting not being able to be in Kentucky like last year because they had the best deep dish pizza there. The thought of sitting around the house eating something mediocre was not high on my to do list so we said screw it and got to driving a little later than we would've liked. Several hours later:
Get in mah belly! It's a carry out only place so we had to eat it in the car but we're pretty used to that so it wasn't a biggie. We have our car food warmer to keep the leftovers at temperature for transport.
There was a geocache not far from it so we grabbed that.

So rare to get a full size one these days! |
Then I looked up famous local graves because I thought I remembered there being a few not too far from there. We chose to go visit Miss Elizabeth and if you ever watched wrestling in the 1980's when Hulkamania was at it's peak, you know who she is. The sweet, petite little southern girl with class and grace that every girl wanted to be and every man either had a crush on or wanted to protect. This is the the storyline most people heard about of Macho Man getting thrown into her and knocking her out that might jog your memory on who she was. Such a horrible shame she died so young.
We saw Daniel Boone was buried in the same cemetery so we headed over there:
We had to laugh as a group of people about 15-20 years older than us were leaving and there's always that one dude in the group who looks up factoids about the person and spouts them off like they knew them all along. Peacocker. Then we decided we'd better head back since we had a long drive ahead. I wish we could've stopped by to visit the horses but other people were renting the house so I bid Foxy adieu from afar. We were also super bummed to see that Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken had closed in the past few months. We were thinking of grabbing some to put in the warmer for the way back but guess not. Sigh.
We made the trek home and it was time for cuppycakes.
Sunday the Mr reminded me I said I wanted to work in the garage. I thought I said because we weren't having trash collection this week because of the holiday we shouldn't and I wanted to work on the basement. I told him to go out there and start the garage and I would go in the basement. Then I see that look of panic on his face like "I thought you were going to help" so I knew I should probably head out after I got some turkey meatloaf together and in the oven. I went out and started going through some stuff and labeling tools that I put in crates for the top shelf. I told him to move the games from the top shelf to the second and put the crates on the top shelf and figured that gave him an idea of how to proceed.
We clearly had two different strategies and once I saw after a break to work on the basement for an hour they didn't align, I just went out and started throwing a bunch of shit away. I'm not hoarding anymore. I know there's more we could throw away but stuff that I was like "what's this?" or had 8 layers of dirt on it were tossed. Stuff we got for free or for one project or crappy chemicals...bye bye. I just wasn't having it because my plan got shifted for the day and when that happens my brain, as my bestie will attest, flips the "rage cleaning mode" switch. I bought some crates and bins for this project months ago and it was finally cool enough (moderately speaking) to be out there to load them up. While we're certainly not done, we made a ton of progress on the shelf portion that stares at you when you pull in.
Rarely used tools and doo dads get moved to the top in crates for the most part. Games moved down a shelf so we may actually play them because we sure as hell aren't getting the ladder down to scale to the ceiling thus far. Screws, brad nails, utility knives and the like were all put into these stackable bins and moved down a shelf where they are just below eye level now. A new tool organizer that was meant for the Mr's birthday was given to him early since we started the project a month earlier than anticipated.
I don't know how much we'll get to today out there but I'm sure the side shelf is next on the list which is a nightmare even though it was cleaned that long ago. Storing painting stuff is always a treat. I was able to consolidate a bin in the basement and I can't consolidate the other one until I go through the craft table and the thought of doing that makes me want to cry. Never mind we missed strength training for the second Sunday in a row so that doesn't feel great but it's not like we weren't doing anything either. Now we're pooped and that was the weekend for us.
How did you spend your holiday weekend? Anything planned for today if you've got the day off?
