What I'm Reading (and Eating) This Week #41

Happy Friday all!  I hope you had a wonderful week full of balance between work and play!  Don't forget to take time to enjoy this season, it's going to go by fast!

It's been another week of head shaking crap going on but somehow, I am more mentally equipped to deal with them.  I'm dealing with some witch on Etsy that is mentally draining.  There is nothing worse than when people take out their frustrations with their situation on you but I made it quite clear that I won't allow her to do that to me given I've been incredibly gracious due to a shipping issue.  I'm still waiting on something from the Netherlands I ordered three weeks ago to come in for a fall display and I see it was in Chicago recently so hopefully I'll have it today or tomorrow.  (Note to self: reset Etsy search to only search US shops.  The Rona is killing international shipping.)  Then I got a set of 1930's sconces from New England that I received Wednesday and they arrived like this:

You know why?  Because the dipwad that shipped them decided "hey, you think 90 year old mirrored sconces should arrive with just some bunched up paper in between?  Me too!"  No bubble wrap.  No padding at ALL.  So the main panel popped out and the smaller one was jammed in a spot that made it ridiculously susceptible to breakage so we had no choice but to bend back the top and bottom enough to let a smaller panel slide back into place then slide the big panel that came out back in.  There are holes on the back so I slid in some Gorilla glue between the panels and metal back so things don't shake around as much with the loose panels.  We are still dumbfounded how we didn't have shattered mirrors everywhere.  Thanks universe!  Luckily, they look awesome next to the picture I got and remind me of the same sconces we had in the house we rented in the Berkshires last October.

(It looks crooked but it's not.  If I stand directly in front of the pic reflections of the TV, canned lights, armoire, etc are all you can see)

Of course, the candle snuffer that has been on top of the armoire for 15 years collecting dust is now nowhere to be found now that I need it.  *hiss*

We had another great week of eats.  Sunday was the turkey chili I showed you Monday.

Monday night we had Shepherd's Pie:

Main pic in the skillet and corner pic is it piled up like a dog's breakfast on the plate.

Tuesday was Chicken Poblano Ravioli with a salad

Wednesday was BBQ shrimp and cheese grits

Thursday we rounded things out with Apple Butter BBQ Chicken and Brussels

Now let's get around to:

The Disgusting Truth About Birthday Candles In A Covid-19 World  (Sorry Mr, you're still getting candles on your cake.)

Clenched Teeth? How That Tension Might Affect The Rest Of The Body  (When this is under control, I'm so getting acupuncture for my TMD)

Helping Couples Create Erotic Empathy  (This makes a lot of sense and I'm so guilty of it)

The Minimalist’s Strength Workout  (Looks like a short but effective!)

11 ways you're secretly sabotaging your sleep  (I'm going to pretend it's not 12:40am as I type this)

10 DIY Copper Pipe Projects To Make (Some really cool ones!)

The Stories Behind 12 Abandoned Mansions  (Who knew there were so many in NY!?)

Vintage Halloween Collectibles (How fun!  That much cluttered into one space would give me a headache but still cool to see such a collection.)

The Mr's birthday is early next week so we're celebrating this weekend.  It's kind of weird not to be heading up to Cherry Hut in Traverse City, MI for the turkey dinner and only time they serve apple pie all year but I don't think they have outdoor seating so...

Hopefully next year?

Maybe?

Probably not.

I don't know what he has planned if anything but I'm sure there will be cake, presents and maybe a viewing of his favorite guilty pleasure horror movie, Trick or Treat with Skippy from Family Ties.  It's as exhilarating as it sounds.

Whatchu up to this weekend?

  1. I don't know how that sconce arrived in a condition that we were able to salvage it but I am sure glad it did and it looks great. We make do once again and it pays off.

I do wish there was a way we could get Cherry Hut but we will at least try to get something closer to home that resembles a good meal as a take out order and make it a picnic at a park or something. I am looking forward to that, and cake!

  2. Ahhhhh, the sconces with the picture -- amazing! Absolutely perfect! Happy early birthday to the Mr! I hope you guys enjoy a nice weekend out and about. It's supposedly our last "summerish" weekend with warm temps. Next week will bring our kind of weather. =o)

Typical stuff for me this weekend, with hopefully putting a table together that I'm making room for. I work so that limits what I can do. But the hubs will take the dogs for a walk and some rides, so they'll get plenty of attention. My mums are starting to open up nicely so I'm hoping to get a pic or two once they bloom a little more.
Enjoy your weekend -- and say hi to Steve and Eydie for me! ;o)

  3. Today (Saturday) I have a zoom class all day. Ugh. It's a class I would have enjoyed in person, but the zoom aspect leaves me feeling flat. Tomorrow will be a grocery run and grading papers. Living the high life, let me tell you.

I'm glad you were able to fix the sconces. It's so funny (but not really funny) that sometimes I get things that aren't breakable and they are wrapped in bubble wrap, extra paper and a huge box, and other things that are much more fragile that just have a little tissue paper around them. I hope you find a nice restaurant for the Mr's birthday. And send my bday wished to him as well please.
