Mildon't and adventurous friends

It's Friday eve!

Yesterday I continued on my productive streak and planted some tulips we picked up a few weekends ago.  I couldn't find the trowel so I had to dig down with a gloved hand and my God I hate worms.  *barfing sound*  I really hope they grow in the spring because that spot has always been a crap shoot.  Actually, I saw my only peony plant (that only gave me ONE friggin' bloom this year) has powdery mildew.  It's been a VERY humid summer and that article basically implies I'm screwed.  It says how to treat it but I know me...that thing is coming out.  It'd be different if it gave me a ton of blooms but I'm mad at it so I'll just start over again next year.  Pffft.   I also hacked up our Japanese maple.  That thing looks like a McDonald's fry guy.  For those who can't bring up the imagery, here:

They're the blobs with eyes in the front row.

I ended up busting a blood vessel in my finger on the clippers.  I still want to thin it out a bit.

I did a little work and a prototype for a Christmas craft, cleaned up a bit, brought out the fall decor or at least a good deal of it.  Then I called back a friend of mine who was flying out today to go run a marathon in Sydney, Australia!  Unfortunately, he has tendinitis so it will be an "interesting" race for him I'm sure.  He has many adventures planned and I'm so happy for him to do all of this awesome stuff.  I'm hoping I can talk him into a guest post about it at some point but I don't want to put more on his plate.  So think good thoughts for him on Sunday, if you please.

We did a killer leg workout that I put together and it was southern comfort food (shrimp and cheese grits) for sustenance.

We've both got doctors appointments today.  Him the dermatologist and me the chiropractor.  If he drills, sands, lasers and pops me like he did last week, I should be able to have even hips in a month.  :-|

What flowers grow best in your garden?  Who was your favorite McDonald's character?

  1. That really bums me out about the peony plant. Seems like we just cannot grow anything there. I hope the bulbs you planted come though. Favorite McDonald's character? Has to be grimace. Not sure why because he never really does much but I liked him for some reason. I also like Hamburgler because I loved seeing Ronald McDonald thwarted from time to time.

  2. Apparently your Mr. and I share a brainwave here - those are my two favorites too and for the same reasons. I will also say that Ronald McDonald always creeped me out as a kid (I'm not scared of clowns in general, just Ronald and Pennywise).

I have 2 rose bushes that the former homeowners planted and one that I planted a few years after moving in and I love them. The are so beautiful, and they may have to come out b/c they are contributing to my basement flooding. I'm going to pull out all the stops to fix the problem around them, but I'm coming to terms with tearing them out if I really have to. It will be a sad day, they are huge and old and probably won't survive transplant even if I had a new place to put them.

I also have the two tomato plants that have taken over the world. Even with giving them away I can't keep up. This weekend I will be making salsa and marinara to freeze and will be putting tomatoes on neighbors' doorsteps in the middle of the night. I'm so happy they've been so productive this year!

  3. I agree with both above about Grimace and The Hamburgler. I also liked the girl duck thingy with her cute pigtails. Grimace always reminded me of Snuffleupagus and I adored him.

I do really well with fall mums every year and love how hearty they are. I agree with Another Layer about tomato plants -- they just keep coming and coming and I, too, have left bags on my neighbor's porch multiple times. I really like the cherry tomatoes we do and they seem to not get caught up in blight the way the bigger ones do in our soil.

  4. I have daylilies that seem to have taken over. Now that they are finally starting to die back I'll thin them out for next year. I didn't get any blooms in one patch this year, so I probably should have done it last year. Oh well. They have basically required no maintenance and they bloomed all summer long.
