What I'm Reading This Week #25

Hello and happy Friday from the land of the scorching sun.  We are in for absolute Hades conditions the next few days, right on cue for the summer solstice.  You know I'm not happy about that. 😒 Thankfully, my other 50% shade cloth just arrived and is airing out so they can go on in the afternoons.  I have stuff in the big planters that are not fans of scorching heat so I need to be as on it as possible if I don't want it to go to poop for other reasons to add to the current reasons.  (Rain, pests, etc) I'm tryin' y'all!  I just got my little lint rollers to roll aphids/larvae off instead of wasting shipping tape.  I swear to you I have not seen ONE BEE since everything went in.  There was this chubby bumble bee that would hang out when our lilac was in bloom and just zone out levitating so I thought for sure she would be here for it all.  Nope.  The second it bloomed, it was gone.  I haven't seen honeybees at all.  I've checked ...

Food Review: Halo Top Gingerbread House

I love gingerbread so you can imagine when I heard Halo Top was doing a gingerbread house flavor for the season that I was all over it.  Actually, the only place that tends to carry the seasonal flavors is this little health food store close to our house and we thought they didn't have it.  Then the Mr. spotted a little cooler up front by the register and when I saw it, I yelled "they have it" and whipped the lid back (which I thought would be heavier) and it echoed through the store.  If the Mr could've shrunk any smaller, he would have.

So let's dive in.

Here's the nutritional info:

The reveal shows us a nice vanilla ice cream with bits of gingerbread.

But how does it taste?

I liked it though I do wish it had a slightly more gingerbread taste.  The vanilla had a very slight eggnog taste to me but it could've been a spice like cardamom or nutmeg.  It had a nice, creamy texture with little bursts of gingerbread.  I think if I were going to get it again, I would do it with the intent of a gingerbread milkshake and maybe add 1/4 tsp of cloves and 1 tbsp of molasses so I would get that punch I was looking for.  However, if you have gingerbread made already, this would make amazing fillings for gingerbread ice cream sandwiches since Kemps cruelly yanked away the Mr and me's favorite gingerbread ice cream sandwiches a few years ago.

Are you a gingerbread fan?

  1. You are right, this would be the perfect filling for a gingerbread ice cream sandwich. Oh how I miss those. Those things signified the start of the Christmas season for me and I would give anything to see them bring those back. I know they still have other things, but nothing worth getting in my opinion.

  2. I do like gingerbread, but I don't really go out of my way to find it. One lady at work usually brings some in this time of year, and that's enough for me.

I love eggnog though. I can't get enough of that, eggnog everything! The one thing about the way to early Christmas stuff every year that I actually enjoy is seeing eggnog on the shelf at Halloween.

  3. I am a gingerbread fan. Making an actual gingerbread with some real whipped cream has always been one of my easy go-to deserts when I'm having people over for dinner in the winter months. I've also got gingerbread men ready for decorating right now in my house. And when I make my own I always double the amount of ginger in the recipe. I like the extra bite it brings to offset the sweetness.

  4. I love ginger but prefer snaps to bread. I make a cookie recipe from Alton Brown that's full of gingery goodness. I'm not sure any gingerbread ice cream would measure up and I'm so cheap I won't spend $5 on a pint. Plus I have issue with milk/cream that get worse every year I age. I'm looking forward to testing a couple recipes for cashew ice cream.

  5. I remember those gingerbread ice cream sandwiches! I thought they still had them, but maybe it's mint I'm thinking of...really overwhelming mint. I LOVE gingerbread. Bread, cookies, ice cream, candles, you name it. It's a flavor that never gets old for me. Yum!
