What I'm Reading This Week #13

Friday is finally here!  Can I get a woot woot?!  (Cheers to those who actually did it.)  The week felt long to start but then before we knew it...blam!  Friday.  We had the countertop dude out to measure and template Tuesday.  The lady who made the appointment said it would be 2-3 weeks after so I'm hoping for sooner than later so I can FINALLY reveal the bathroom to you guys!  Kind of stinks though because we were told they would take the sink/faucet with them and that was a big fat no.  We were looking forward to getting that big azz box out of the house.  Soon enough I guess.   You may have noticed a little zhuzh to the site (probably more for those on laptops) but I figured it was time and I think they retired my previous theme anyway.  So it's a little minimalistic but there wasn't a ton to choose from on the free side so I took what I could get.  Enjoy. šŸ˜„ I sat down and did a spreadsheet of my seeds, when they were...

Hump Day Poll: Come on Ride the Train...and Ride It

Have you ever taken a train trip? If not, would you like to travel that way?

I was kind of intrigued by it but I recently read an article (that, of course, I can't find now) that chronicled this guy traveling by train and I crossed it off the list.  In a two person room, the seats faced each other and there wasn't even room for their legs.  In a 'family' suite, it could barely fit two people so it completely turned me off to the idea.  Obviously we'd never do it during this time anyway but even if we ever get through this pandemic, I don't think train travel on something longer than a tour is for me.

  1. Not sure I could do the overnight thing on a train. I just don't think I could sleep in cramped quarters or especially one of those trains with bunks that only have a curtain between you and everyone else. No thanks. But I do like riding trains for short periods of time. Wouldn't mind doing a train with a nice dinner or something and a nice round trip through fall foliage would be really cool.

  2. I've ridden Amtrak from Washington DC to Philadelphia and back once when I was on a trip. I've also done touristy one day rides, but never anything longer (like overnight). I'd like to once, but I might regret it.

  3. I have taken very short train trips while on vacation, from one city to another. It wasn't anything magical, but it was faster than trying to fly when you took into account travel to and from the airport plus wait times.

I have contemplated taking overnight trips with a sleeper car while travelling in Europe, but so far none of those trips ever worked with my overall itinerary. I have done similar trips on ferries, so the semi-communal sleeping arrangements don't bother me.

  4. I took a train down to Carbondale in my teens, which was a small hike, and several in and out of Chicago. I was supposed to go to DC with my aunt one year but that got cancelled. I do remember train trips when I was in Europe, so I'm going to assume from one country to another. I would like to do a train trip in Ireland and Scottland, I think.

  5. I took a train from Milwaukee to Chicago. That was pretty cool, and we were in the sightseeing car, so it was a clear glass ceiling to really get a full view of everything. I would totally do that again, but longer or overnight. Probably not.

  6. My SO and I took Amtrak from the SF Bay Area to Glacier National Park in Montana (and back). That was four different trains. Four nights of having to sleep on the train. We broke the journey with stays in Seattle and Portland and of course spent time at GNP. Never slept well on the train. We had a full sleeping car which was actually very nice and roomy enough for us but the movement of the train car kept waking me up. The tiny rooms where you face each other are called "roomettes" I believe and I could not handle that unless I had the whole space to myself. But, I would totally do it again because I loved being on the train and watching the world go by. Very different from a car trip. Highly recommend Amtrak's Empire Builder train out of Portland. The views from the astrodome car as it passes through the Columbia Gorge are beautiful.

  7. I've taken Amtrak's Empire Builder from northeastern Montana to Seattle a couple of times. It's about a 24-hour trip, much of it during the night. I haven't tried the sleeper cars instead opting for coach. I hardly ever had a seatmate so I could stretch out. Only once did I have trouble sleeping. I have a friend who swears by the sleeper cars. I prefer it to driving as it is a 2-day trip with some not so nice roads, not hitting interstate until almost in Idaho.
