Just before Valentines Day, I decided it was time to give the mantel a refresh. I thought it would look nice in a spring motif that I could keep up for a bit. I couldn't decide if I wanted to have a coastal feel or a romantic feel and then I decided what the heck, go for both!
I've decided to keep the window there for now so I needed something with a little height so I grabbed these upcycled candlesticks I made from old spools that didn't sell in my shop. I told myself if they didn't sell after two renewals those bad boys were mine.
SNATCHIES!
The shell candle is a rogue gift my mom got me for Christmas that ended up looking nice there so I scattered some of the shells we got from Bar Harbor around it. The light pink vase and flower were a clearance item I picked up from a vintage shop I loved that closed its doors.
On the other side is something I picked up specifically for that space for a little height and interest. I was at a vintage store in the city and came across this beautiful stack of books (obviously de-spined) wrapped with antique crocheted lace and secured with a brooch. For $24, I couldn't pass it up! I needed something to bring a tad more height and I seem to be in love with tureens when I shop at antique stores so I couldn't resist this pretty tea rose tureen for $8. They had a really bad faux plant in it that they were just going to give to me but I told them to keep it because I had a plant that would fit. I didn't have a plant at the time but when we went to Trader Joe's later that night, I saw this white hyacinth for $2.50. They had a brown crappy wrapper around the plant so I just used a piece of antique sheet music to wrap around it. The Waltz in G never looked so good.
I can reuse the books over and over by just adding some new piece to the top of them or tuck some greens under the lace with an ornament or two at the holidays. I love the romantic look of it all so I'm happy with my romantic coastal mantel to get me thinking spring even in the dead of winter.

I love the way it looks and it's nice to see that things we pick up during some of our travels around to different places and stores come together the way they do.

DeleteThat is simply beautiful. I especially love the tea rose tureen. And the hyacinth you put inside--perfection! I took down my Valentine's decorations and now I can't find the St. Paddy's day box. So I might just skip that holiday and put up the Easter things. They're much more "Spring-y" anyhow!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yeah I couldn't leave the store without that! I wish the hyacinth lasted a little longer, the big one has started to turn but a little one has popped up. Yeah, I was looking at Easter stuff too. Can't believe it's that time already!

ReplyDeleteThanks mama! You'd never know of my "gift" most of the time we lived here. My mantel was really only used at Christmas time and the rest of the year it had two small votives on each end to flank a huge picture of the Hanalei Valley in the middle. It was fine but I saw many home bloggers do all kinds of cool stuff on their mantels and thought I'd give it a whirl! :-)
DeleteI've been searching everywhere for the same spools and the holes are always slightly off to fit the other set of glass votive holders I have to go in there. Always on the look out though. If I find any, I'll let ya know! ;-)
Your sense of style ALWAYS impresses me. I am the least artistic person I know. I will compose a wonderful article about what YOU do, but I'm shamefully lacking in all things decorative. Unless it is my beloved city's fleur de lis or my state's magnolias, I'm sunk for how to decorate anything. You did a beautiful job. Bravo!! --Missy
ReplyDeleteAww, thanks so much Missy! I always take inspiration from how different vintage stores or decor blogs and think of how I could use them in my own home. It's pretty fun to see what I can and can't pull off! :-) I bet you'd do better than you think!

ReplyDeleteWell I only started actually decorating it when I finished my living room remodel in September so I've done fall themes, then Christmas/winter and now this one. Who knows if I'll keep this up but it's kinda fun! :-)
DeleteThe window is gorgeous so it was a good choice to keep that in the display. Genius idea for those upcycled candlesticks, too. I have some old spools that are even bigger that I bought for one purpose and then didn't use them (ever happen to you??!?!?!) but now I'm thinking they could be repurposed as well.
