What I'm Reading This Week #14

Annnnd we're revving into Friday. source I must start with a teary goodbye to Val Kilmer.  No lie, three days before he passed I got the song " How Silly Can You Get " from the movie Top Secret in my head out of nowhere.  I hadn't seen a reference, heard anything about him and definitely hadn't heard that song in 20+ years.  I said to the Mr "I wonder how Val is doing?" then I soon got my answer.  I remember seeing Top Secret at the drive in with Mom when it came out.  When Real Genius came out on HBO, it was one of the few movies my Dad and I bonded over, is in my top five movies of all time and is the Mr and I's love language after I make him king of the winter carnival.   source Anyone who followed Val's career and personal life over the decades knows he got a little out of the box and didn't settle for norms which also included his approach to his throat cancer.  He lived authentically himself which is something we all hope to say when o...

What Day Is It Weekend Recap

Sup Monday and what's up with y'all?  The time for weekend shenaniganry is through and time to bid adieu to March.  I can't believe we're just over a quarter through the year, though it's been quite productive.  I got a sweet sale on some spray paint to repaint the skinny and bigger patio tables.  I'd already painted the skinny one with flat high heat paint but discovered a pretty bad split on the leg.  I haven't the power, time or money to search for a new one so I got the bondo out and filled in the hole to keep it from getting worse and once it was cured spray painted it in satin Canyon Black and it looks so much better.  I spray painted all of the hooks and planter holders I took down as well and that took care of a can.  We also got the mammoth planters moved out to the patio.  Definitely an eye opener how tight it's going to be out there.  I miscalculated on the smaller one and we'll need to uninstall and move the folding table we made on the gate over about an inch or so because it won't open right now.  How I wish we had two more feet.  Well, if we could get rid of the equally mammoth grill we'd have exactly that.  I might see as sales come if anyone local would want to buy it for $150 (a $500 grill) so we could use that money for a pipsqueak grill.  Hoping for this year but maybe next year.

We got the surprise news that our countertop will actually be going in Thursday (!) instead of the 2-3 week timetable given so we're happy about that.  We'll have to take so much out/down because it's no longer assumed contractors can do their jobs without wrecking everything in sight so we're going to be extra prepared.  It will be nice to have that done so we can move on from that project.  It also paved the way to give the go ahead for our final final project.  You remember when the Mr ripped out the carpet in September?  We went ahead and did essentially a layaway with Mom's money when the bathroom project got delayed and had two years to get it installed interest free.  We haven't been able to finish all of the other projects like baseboards, the railing and newel post because the chance of touch ups to those areas were high.  They come out today to measure and give the final quote and that feels like a dream because we've lived with these horrible steps way longer than anticipated.

That brought us to our actual weekend projects.  The Mr had to go in to work first thing which sucked.  He got his stuff taken care of and then it was the walls of doom.

As you can see, ZERO insulation between us and the heathen next door.  When he opened that up, it was pure second hand smoke wafting through.  We couldn't get it insulated fast enough but fast is not how this went and it was LOUD using the multi tool to which the knuckledragger began slamming around in the garage in pissedoffed-ness.   Oh we just getting started son but I'm not going to lie, that is my ultimate cringe is knowing we're disturbing others- even massive festering walking turd men.  šŸ’©  I should've wizened up and threw on my earphone headband so I could jam out pretend I didn't hear it all.  I would come inside while the Mr used the multi tool because it severely hurts my ears.  Then it was a matter of Tetrising the pieces of batting in each cavity.   Of course the studs were 24" in between instead of 16" like the exterior wall on the other side like I suspected so the batting wouldn't go in as is.  We ended up needing 4 1/2 full bats per stud hole  (šŸ˜³) and had to buy more which isn't ideal but the fact this guy stores flammable liquids in his (OUR attached) garage means there is no fire suppression between us.  So this project served two, actually three purposes given how much smoke was filling the cavities just from him and his henchman being in there to light up on the daily.  That's right, smoking by hazardous chemicals.

(Suck it, ratface.  Filled to the rim, with Brim.)

So sound suppression, smoke suppression and God forbid, fire suppression.  While spending the money for the two extra bags (ha-just wait) of Safe and Sound batting wasn't on our to do or budget lists, we absolutely needed to do it for our own health and safety.  Yes, we'd love to move but you've seen it out there.  Ain't happening unless we have some rich relative we don't know of that likes us a lot.  I got a good coating of insulation crap in my lungs that I was coughing up the rest of Saturday and the Mr was a drenched pup as it reached 80 that day.  (NOT ready for that yet.)  He got about halfway done by 5pm Saturday before needing to get a bag of insulation and got to a spot where a lot of stuff was on the walls that needed to be taken down.  We weren't up for letting even the smallest screw holes let any of his skank waft in.  I'm sure he thought we were "done done."  Just wait until Sunday sir and tell the guests we saw you had hello. šŸ‘‹

Because it was so 'moist' in the garage the day before, we slapped on our head and neck fans to keep us a little cooler as well as keep the debris blowing out of our eyes.  That was the busiest day because not only did we have to finish the cutting, stuffing, screwing and joint compounding of everything but we also had to clean because the carpet measure dude is coming at some random time today we're unaware of.  Since I knew how wide everything had to be on the batting cuts to fit beside the normal sized piece (9"), I precut six of those and halved the leftover strip from the cutting which fit perfectly in the upper part of the cavity.  That way we could bang them out as quickly as possible, relatively speaking. (I left the last one uncut until we were ready to work on it because I didn't trust a non curve ball to be thrown whether it was size wise or finding 29 year old trapped wildlife.)  Whilst cutting, I realized we weren't going to have enough.  šŸ¤¬  Are you friggin kidding me?!  Sigh, we didn't have a choice.  We couldn't leave the last 2 1/2 unfilled.  While it wouldn't be ideal, we have cheaper insulation on the other side that we could just pull that out in a few studs and use the leftover we would now have over there.  Obviously, Lowe's wasn't on it like they were on Saturday and they were holding us up so after 2 hours, the Mr headed over and cancelled the order and picked it up himself.  It's always something.   While he was gone I cut up the 4 we had in there to the proper proportions waiting for his return.  When he got back, it took less than 15 minutes to get the last ones taken care of.

Once that was done, I could start cleaning while he was screwing and spackling to his heart's content.  There was so much to do and not enough time to do it.  We're juggling so much with trying to get the patio in order (we started to hang our outdoor art but got sidetracked because one of the screws was missing and we never got back to it and then biblical rain on Sunday), I have spray primer for the patio table that I needed to paint, and the audacity to think we'd somehow be able to do all of that and tackle this as well

Twas laughable as the weekend progressed.  The Mr asked "should I just rip out the carpet on these stairs?"  I told him it was up to him as I knew we'd do it at some point this week.  He was already drenched so why not, I guess.  He commenced slicing and dicing with his box cutter and got it done in pretty quick order and into the trash for pickup today.  (Thank God because with the heavy winds, people's trash cans were sailing by so the now wet carpet weighed it down.)

When we were finally able to wind the heck down for the night, I flipped on the candle warmer my friend got me for Christmas since blazing up the fireplace would've overheated us, we settled in with a nice beverage and zoned out for the rest of the night.  I feel horrible for the Mr because it was really mostly him doing the heavy labor of it all because not like we could both be on the ladder.  Not that I didn't suffer with the incessant itch of "no fiberglass" insulation which clearly has something itchy in it as well and taking a chunk out of my knuckle somehow  but that was nothing compared to his workout.  I swept the floor/rug and the stair treads then grabbed Mom's wet jet to get the floors shined up a little.  The house was in no means what I would consider 'company ready' but we've got a lot of outstanding project piles that people are going to have to overlook or pizz off.

Today I have a blood test to make sure the statins aren't blowing out my liver and pray they're doing their job.  So send out some artery unclogging vibes, if you please.  Then I'll be heading to the vein doctor to figuratively crack some skulls as they're trying to charge me for copays I've already paid.  I have emailed 3x, called three different phone numbers and no one will call me back to address it after me sending them screenshots of the proof of payment.  So now they get me in person, hangry from fasting at 11am and I hope other patients are in the waiting room to hear me lay into them.

Ahh, the delights of adulthood.

How was your weekend?

  1. What a weekend but hopefully more work that pays dividends in the long run. If nothing else it's worth it just having that extra fire protection knowing what an idiot we live next to.

    1. I can't thank you enough for busting your butt this weekend with that. I know it's a huge PITA but we've been mulling this project for about 5 years and I'm thrilled it's finally done. Let's hope we can now go into our own garage in peace.

  2. That is ALOT, well done! I tackled my garage and got the hubs truck started and out of the garage to sell after 14 years.
I'm getting a new to me vehicle next week and need the space. My current vehicle is cosmetically totalled so I need to deal with the insurance guy this week. Been driving it since November because although it is low value it was paid for and not worth another car.
Crazy how someone can eff up your finances with a fender bender.
    Have a great week!

    1. I'm sure that had to be difficult and big hugs to you. So sorry you got hit and I'm assuming they didn't have insurance if you were unable to immediately get it fixed? I hope all works out for you this week and feel free to send over pics of the new ride.

  3. That sounds like a wonderful weekend of getting a lot of things tackled and taken care of! Wahoo!! That always feels good when you can say mission accomplished! I hope tour bloodwork appt goes well and comes back with good results. Bah...so annoying when a place co tunes to try to charge you when you have receipts that you've already paid! Grrrr!!
It was a good weekend here. Haircuts on Saturday, then a deli stop for the hub's lunches, then a whole lots stuff around the house that we each worked on. Sunday was church and the hubs had half a day, so we enjoyed a restful afternoon watching March Madness games in between napping. Lol. It was so warm and humid during the day, but then went down to 32Ā° degrees last night and was snowing g when I took the garbage to the curb. Goofy weather!
