Falling for Fall Hump Day Poll

This is the last Hump Day Poll of summer and you know I'm falling for Fall.  I think many of our warm fuzzies for the season come from childhood.  (This post contains affiliate links that help keep this blog running at no cost to you.  See the Disclaimer page for more info)

Whether it was the annual viewing of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown to wandering a pumpkin patch looking for the perfect pumpkin...

or carving it with our parents or siblings.

Maybe it was deciding what you were going to be for trick or treat.

Or jumping into that big pile of leaves.

Maybe you bobbed for apples back in the day?

Or just the thought of trick or treating with your pals or neighborhood kids brings smiles.

We all have different memories that are some of the fondest as Fall approaches.  In that spirit, here's today Hump Day Poll:

(While I love all of them.  I think my favorite was jumping into a pile of leaves.  There is something so inherently childlike about it.  You're not thinking about if there are bugs in it, how many crunched up leaves you're going to be picking/brushing out of your hair, you just rush in, throw caution to the wind and jump.  Maybe you lay there for a minute or two inhaling the scent or wet or crunchy leaves and that's enough or maybe you push the pile together again and go for a few more gleeful jumps.  Carefree childhood at it's best.  I'm going to see if anyone has a leaf pile I can borrow next month.)

  1. When I first noticed how much I loved the fall as a kid, it was when I was in 8th grade and I was playing football for my school. Except, the days I loved most were actually the "bye weeks" (we did not call them that back then) because I was able to enjoy my Saturday in the fall the way it was before I was kind of forced into playing football - watching Saturday morning cartoons, walking outside and enjoying the crisp fall air and smelling the smells that fall brings. I remember just appreciating what I was missing out on because of being in football. Can you tell I didn't like playing? It wouldn't be until after my freshman year of HS that I finally took a stand and quit football and told my parents I was forming a rock band. That went over well (enough).

  2. As a child I loved planning and then making my Halloween costume. There were no purchased costumes in my household, it was all about your own creativity with maybe a trip to the local thrift store for components and to the local drug store/department store for makeup.

As an adult I look forward to the local scarecrow and pumpkin people festivals. As a part of the local scarecrow festival they used to have a lit pumpkin walk where you could view some amazing carved pumpkins lit up at night. But it has gone down hill in the last few years, people got tired of volunteering and no one new stepped in to help. I also now love picking out and carving my own pumpkins. I'm not good enough to include a pumpkin in the walk, but I love figuring out what I want to carve and then trying to execute it. I usually carve two or three before each Halloween.

  3. The main memories I have are the walks to the bus stop for school. I loved how dark it was in the mornings, and I loved when the leaves were damp and the skies a bit dreary on my walks home. There was a "cozy" feel to me, like I was being wrapped in a hug in a sense. In my late teens I remember listening to Yanni on the boombox making crafts with a candle lit. It's something about the lighting outside that just invoked a calmness in me. It's probably why I tend to like the rainy non-sunny days now.

  4. Picking out a pumpkin and then carving it at home! I also loved picking apples from my Grandma's apple tree.
