What I'm Reading This Week #31

Good morning and welcome to August.  Time is so weird, isn't it.  It's insane we're starting the 8th month of the year but yet if I thought back to where we started the year in snow, that seems like a lifetime ago.  It's been a very long year yet seems to have gone fast - how does that work?  Anyhoo, I hope you're ready to roll for the weekend and the week didn't drop kick you too hard.   Once again our HOA was refusing to do their job and wanted to check the drainage.  This problem is on our subfloor. ..above anyplace for drainage to be an issue with no gutters above it.  Then the woman in power sits on emails all friggin' day and purposely sends things out on her way out the door so another day gets wasted.  Oh the things the Mr and I say about her that I can't say here.  I was shaking so bad Monday night I wanted to go out and rip the damn siding off myself but we worked out instead to try to work off the frustration.  I called o...

Dough-splosion!

Sunday night I couldn't get to sleep because I was starting to think of all of the things I needed to do.

One of those things was to get my cookie doughs that I bake for others going so I don't have to spend a whole day both pre-mixing and then baking a zillion different cookies.  So when the Mr came home, this was his view...



I got 4 doughs done...ChocoRolo (sans rolos of course until baking day), Snowballs for the MIL, shortbread and ginger molasses (a new to me recipe this year since I'm craving Bent Fork Bakery's ginger molasses cookies and these looked similar.)  To make it easier on myself come baking day, I keep up my habit of writing the type of cookie, oven temp needed and bake time so I don't need to go searching for recipes.




While a little crumb here or there went into the pie hole for "quality control", it was nowhere near as bad as it could've and has been in the past.  I immediately turned on the hot water as I would spoon it into a bowl to be chilled and shove the beater, mixing bowl and spatula under it so I couldn't scrape the bowl with my finger.  Well, wearing food gloves helps with that but I even wash those because I just don't trust myself sometimes.  Oy.

I think I have 4 more to make today so the freezer tray should be nice and full and next week my logs and new baking sheets will be ready to start pumping out the holiday deliciousness.

  1. This is the way to do it. I know you enjoy baking but by the end of a big day of baking you aren't quite getting the enjoyment out of it. But by breaking the baking up from the dough prep I noticed how much more enjoyable the process was for you last year. Now I want cookies!

  2. Maybe I should try it this way. I like to make cookies, but sometimes by the end I just want to be done.

    I have quite a few recipes that you've shared that I make (egg nog cookies are one of my favorites) plus I like the basic sugar cookies that I can't seem to get right, as well as chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin.

    My favorite Christmas cookies ever are pizzelles, but I don't have the special iron for them and if I did I wouldn't have a place to store it in the off season.

  3. I love cookies in general. My favourite year 'round cookie is a chocolate chip peanut butter oatmeal cookie. However, around the holidays I seem to crave ginger molasses cookies, maccaroons, and biscotti.

  4. Oh, it looks like you were having some fun in that kitchen missy! I love how you plan it all out so you don't have to redo any steps and can pace yourself so it's actually fun to do and takes at least some of the stress away. And you only nibbled here and there and feel good about that -- wahoo!! I so hear you about washing the bowls and utensils right away just for that reason. I've been known to pour some dish soap on food I'm going to throw in the garbage so I'm not tempted to eat it before it actually gets there. =o)
