What I'm Reading This Week #25

Hello and happy Friday from the land of the scorching sun.  We are in for absolute Hades conditions the next few days, right on cue for the summer solstice.  You know I'm not happy about that. 😒 Thankfully, my other 50% shade cloth just arrived and is airing out so they can go on in the afternoons.  I have stuff in the big planters that are not fans of scorching heat so I need to be as on it as possible if I don't want it to go to poop for other reasons to add to the current reasons.  (Rain, pests, etc) I'm tryin' y'all!  I just got my little lint rollers to roll aphids/larvae off instead of wasting shipping tape.  I swear to you I have not seen ONE BEE since everything went in.  There was this chubby bumble bee that would hang out when our lilac was in bloom and just zone out levitating so I thought for sure she would be here for it all.  Nope.  The second it bloomed, it was gone.  I haven't seen honeybees at all.  I've checked ...

Midweek Check In

Happy Hump Day to you and yours!  Anyone else having a case of the "short week feels longer than a regular week" yet or does that hit tomorrow?

Unfortunately, Monday afternoon the tweens/teens found the pool not too far from the abode so we got to listen to the hootings of young, insecure males attempting to show off for both girls and their fellow brethren.  I'm really hoping this is just some cousins visiting or something for the weekend because I know of only one teen boy here and he's a loner.  Is pool season over yet?   It always starts strong like this and then typically dies down within a month but what an irritating month it is until then.  We did some more work out on the patio Monday.  It was going to be the last sunny day before two days of forecasted rain...again.  I made sure to get the new picket painted and hung to cover this delightful sight:

When the picket was off, I could see how bad the support 2x4's looked on the fence.  Like the ends were kind of curling up.  Now the other side of the fence is the original shadowbox design and it looks HORRIBLE.  We're supposed to upkeep it and we don't.  We've gotten a letter twice over the past 30 years telling us to paint it.  Well at this point, we'll need to rip those boards off and I want to place them to close it in completely.  In order to do that, we'll need to replace those 2x4's.  We were discussing how to do it (next year- can't do it right now)  I also figured if we're going to try to make things last as long as possible then I would get the plastic wood filler and fill in the splits at the tops of pickets plaguing about 1/3 of our interior fence.

I really wish I'd thought to do that BEFORE moving the gargantuan planters out there but why make things easier on myself?  I covered the plants with a canvas drop cloth, sanded the filler smooth then got to painting it all.  I have to say it looks much better than before and will buy us another year, maybe two.  But I also don't want to wait too long because the price of pickets from the time we built the planters in March to now is $.75 more per picket.  There's already a 14.5% tariff on soft wood from Canada and it'll potentially jump to 27% in the next two months.  So I'm seriously considering getting half the job now and stacking weights on them in the basement to keep them flat because that is going to get even more expensive.  I could kick myself for not just getting the pickets then to replace everything on the inside.  Lots of stuff to do out there last weekend and I really put the little Bluetooth speaker to the test but it played on from my Spotify list inside like a champ for hours on end so it at least made for a more pleasant time out there if I had to be doing work.

I boiled up some corn on the cob, added some smokehouse maple seasoning to turkey breast burgers and we had our final grill out of the holiday weekend.  When the sun went down, we busted out the outdoor projector again and watched Jurassic Park.

It was a great way to end a long weekend of work, grilling and the last of the cooler temps before we get slapped into the 80's tomorrow.  It's probably one of the better Memorial Day weekends we've had in a while so I'll take it!

Anything going on with you so far this week?
