What I'm Reading This Week #14
Annnnd we're revving into Friday. source I must start with a teary goodbye to Val Kilmer. No lie, three days before he passed I got the song " How Silly Can You Get " from the movie Top Secret in my head out of nowhere. I hadn't seen a reference, heard anything about him and definitely hadn't heard that song in 20+ years. I said to the Mr "I wonder how Val is doing?" then I soon got my answer. I remember seeing Top Secret at the drive in with Mom when it came out. When Real Genius came out on HBO, it was one of the few movies my Dad and I bonded over, is in my top five movies of all time and is the Mr and I's love language after I make him king of the winter carnival. source Anyone who followed Val's career and personal life over the decades knows he got a little out of the box and didn't settle for norms which also included his approach to his throat cancer. He lived authentically himself which is something we all hope to say when o...
It's all about the beat. Who cares how old some of the songs might be if they get you to move faster and increase your efforts when you need it.
ReplyDeleteMy top ten jams are pretty much the same as yours since we play the same playlist but I can't wait to see what other people have to say about theirs.
Absolutely! I'm surprised. You and I vary in our musical tastes but I guess you can't really workout to Iron Maiden.
DeleteHey im a 25 year old fogey then because I enjoy all those songs. especially the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, I got to see them this summer on our trip to Chicago for Comic Con. We didn't know they were playing until the day of the concert but we splurged and went, best concert ever. I can't listen to them with out dancing, shaking my booty and general giddiness with a big ol' grin on my face. Even though they are getting up there in age those guys did not stop moving in their full on suits the entire show. I am really not a fan of current music either. I think i was supposed to be born about 5-10 years earlier than I was, Im a 30something at heart. Hahaha
ReplyDeleteHey, if the Stones and Aerosmith are still at it, why not the MMB's? :)
DeleteI like some of those songs, and some new music. Mostly though my musical tastes stopped long before yours. Give me anything from the 80s-mid 90s and I'll be happy.
ReplyDeleteMe too. Well some 90's. Block out 50% of the hip hop crap from that time and I'm good to go. (Yeah, totally sounded like a geriatric there.)
DeleteI have been jamming out to some Owl City lately. Never liked the one song that made it to the radio, but the rest have a positive, up beat rhythm that keeps me moving.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of 'em. LOL Will have to Youtube 'em later.
DeleteWell if those are old. I guess mine have dinasaur tracks, because most of them are from the 70's! Bob Seagar, Styx, Boson and Foghat. (OH man I'm old!) LOL
ReplyDeleteOh I have entire 70's and 80's playlists as well! ;-)
DeleteGive me the 90s...thats when I started listening to english music and i like techno music and Enigma to zone out when I do strength training...I am guilty..I enjoyed the NKOTBSB concert last year...heeheh
ReplyDeleteEnigma ROCKS! I loved that era of "Pure Moods!"
DeleteI just added two old songs to my workout playlist:
ReplyDeletePoison by Bell Biv Devoe
and Let's go Crazy by Prince.
I love Short Skirt and Long Jacket, Milkshake, & Kelis!
Awesome list!
I can't acknowledge Poison because it represented a shift in music I couldn't stand in high school. (Kind of like how Nirvana killed my beloved hair bands! LOL)
DeleteI had to laugh at this one:
ReplyDeleteMaroon 5- Moves like Jagger (yes, I'm the only person on Earth not sick of it)
Even though I am sick of that song, I can't help but sing with it on the radio!
I have been loving Will.I.Am and Brittney Spears song, and Mackelmore (sp?) Thift shop.

I know! It's like when it comes on, I just want to shake mah boo-tay!
DeleteJust the mention of Jason Mewes and mangina made me crush on you all the more! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm 40, so my playlist has a few of your faves, but mostly I dig 70's-80's and then some of the early 90's. Current music pretty much sucks to my ears, but I do like me some Taylor Swift, Matchbox 20, and of course Maroon 5 because I could just eat up Adam Levine with a spoon! ~Krista
HA! There are probably people who stopped reading the blog after the Jay and Silent Bob reference! I can roll low brow at times. ;)
DeleteI can't get enough of Moves Like Jagger (probably because I have an obsession with Adam Levine). I also listen to several other Maroon 5 songs when I run...like One More Night, Misery (kinda funny when that song plays when I am huffin it and have 2 miles still left)
ReplyDeleteLately I am really into a group called Neon Trees. I listen to their stuff a lot. One of my fav songs is called I Am the DJ.
Good on ya girl! I was supposed to see Neon Trees with Duran Duran...before they CANCELLED on me...again. Bitter...party of one.
DeleteHello, Moves Like Jagger is only what, about a year old? Two at most. Not that I play music to work out to, which I don't because my workouts are mostly hikes and I like talking to my fellow hikers. But I couldn't resist poking a little gentle fun at you young things that don't like modern music, but like 'oldies' from the 80's and 90's. I started listening to popular music in the 50's, and there hasn't been a decade since that was a total loss in terms of good music...including this one. When I 'discovered' blues in the early 90's or so, my tastes expanded to include the entire 20th century, from even before I was born. So yeah, I like 'Moves Like Jagger', LOVE 'Short Skirt, Long Jacket' and probably a few of the others, since I never know the name of a song, just the 'hook'. My favorite song to Zumba to was 'Hips Don't Lie' (Shakira). OK, now I've got to fire up hubby's 40-gig music hard drive and just have it play randomly.
ReplyDeleteTry it's heading on 2 years old in about 3-4 months. ;-)
DeleteI never said I didn't have an all Elvis playist from the 50's, Disco playlist and 400 songs from the 80's in rotation and because I'm in denial, I hardly consider 80's "oldies!"
You and me both! I haven't discovered a new band I like in at least 10 years. When I was a kid, I used to make fun of my mom for listening to Cat Stevens and Seals & Crofts non-stop in the car and now I'm going to be that person.
