"See you on the other side, Ray"

Yesterday, I woke up to this...

The Mr made me breakfast for my birthday.

Yep.  It was a big one...

The small cake we had over the weekend

I'll be honest, my feelings about this particular birthday change by the hour. I don't need a pep talk about how its 'still young' and all that crap...I requested a Hello Kitty birthday cake so I haven't lost my inner child.  I'm getting some posts together in the coming weeks that'll give some insight into my warped brain and how I've approached this milestone.  Oh yeah, for any twenty somethings who might be tempted to unfollow me fearing this will turn into some middle aged blog, I say stick around...ain't no one gonna tell you the truth like I will as I encounter new 'blessings' of 40-50 more years above ground.  (God willing)  If I go into early menopause, start farting without noticing or grow a mustache, you can come along for the ride and prep up when your youth runs out as well.  Consider me your older, blunt sister or cool aunt that you want to sit by at the reunion.  For the rest of ya's my age or older, don't tell me what's coming.  I like to be surprised.  I've heard the horror stories and I don't need something to obsess about...I'm obsessing enough with trying to deal with the loss of my thick hair and now needing to use root booster on a regular basis.

So I very carefully planned my calories for the day and thought about how I wanted to celebrate.  I received a phone call from a good friend who serenaded me and reminded me how good it is to have good people in your life.  Thanks Jeff!  After our conversation, I decided I wanted to get our workout out of the way so it wasn't hanging over us the rest of the day.  We did Leslie Sansone's Firm 30 strength workout and I invented new curse words since I wasn't fully recovered from Sunday's strength workout.  We quickly threw together lunch, got showers and headed off to see Ghostbusters (affiliate link) in the theater.

When that fuzzy picture popped up on the screen, I was 10 again.  We both commented on how many things we noticed seeing it on the big screen versus seeing it on the small screen.  I mean we probably watch this movie 2-3x per year not including passing it by on TV.  Facial expressions, extras and just little things you can't possibly absorb.  We both admitted afterward we got emotional at different parts.  Hell, I got emotional just seeing the ghost at the beginning because I remembered how much it scared the crap out of me as a kid!  But we both got emotional when we saw the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

It was just something about seeing that iconic figure from our childhood and I felt both like a child and like my age.  It was conflicting and almost tear inducing but I held back so as not to make an ass of myself in the theater.  As the credits rolled and we watched the people leave, we were about the same age as most people there and one older lady there by herself I think.  I was happy to see that people wanted to relive one of their favorite movies from their youth on the big screen as well and no one was super annoying.  It was the perfect way to spend my birthday.

Afterward, we walked to Trader Joe's and picked up some protein shakes we forgot Sunday.  Then it was back to the house for a bit and I made dinner.  Chicken quesadilla and half a grilled sweet potato.  We relaxed and then it was time for my 'cake'...

Pumpkin spice donuts are my absolute favorite and I planned for it.  So yummy!

Then it was time for a mushy card from the Mr that made me cry...

Then it was time to open presents and the Mr LOATHED the paper I chose.

Hey...I like Christmas.  I like puppies.  It needed to be used.  We've had the roll for like 13 years and used to wrap our dog and my mom's dog toys in it for Christmas.  It was just sad to look at come holiday time.  I got some DVD's and craft stuff I wanted and a chill day with my guy.

I'm not going to make any grand declarations of what this decade will hold for us but I know as long as I have my honey and you guys by my side, it'll be amazing!

  2. Happy birthday!

I saw Ghostbusters in the theater this weekend, too. It was my first viewing since Harold Ramis died and it was so great to finally watch the best movie ever once again.

When they do these rereleases they should show the old trailers that were shown. How fun would that be?

  3. So glad you enjoyed your birthday yesterday. It's hard to do anything major when your birthday falls on a weekday like that but in a way that was advantageous since we got to see Ghostbusters with a very small crowd of people instead of a full theater. I like JLVerde's idea about showing old trailers. That would be awesome because I would bet that some of the old trailers that would have been shown with Ghostbusters would be stuff for 1985 such as Back to the Future, Breakfast Club, etc.

  4. I feel ya on turning 40! I hit the big 4-0 back in June and I am still not sure what I think about it. So far, I don't have a mustache and I haven't hit early menopause or started randomly farting (gotta count my blessings on that one, lol!) Anyway, glad you had the the low-stress, fun day you hoped for!

  5. Happy Birthday! I turned 40 this year too! I look at 40 as I am glad I made it! Too many people don't.

The only age that ever really freaked me out was 25. Not really sure why, but that age just seemed so monumental and so I got a tattoo. Not the most original thing to do, but to me it just felt right.

And Ghostbusters is the best movie. I actually got to see it in the theater when I was 10. The 80's had such great movies. It was a good time to be a kid. You must watch The Goldbergs--it is 80's awesomeness.
