What I'm Reading This Week #34

Hello you sassy beast!  Ready for another flip flappin' fantastic weekend?  Yes indeedy, Ally Sheedy.

It's been a week of working ahead for me as I try to work on ideas for holiday posts.  I know, no one is ready for Christmas but spit balling stuff is actually getting me excited for the season.  I like to try to give myself the month of December off from writing new posts (except updating weekly happenings) so all I have to do is respond if needed.  It lets me take a little mental break during the holidays to try to enjoy what I can then hop back into the new year hopefully rested and ready to roll.

We did book our 30th anniversary trip, which is the same one we had to cancel this year and of course got travel insurance.  It's just nice to have something to hopefully look forward to and it makes you go "where the heck did 4 1/2 years go?" because it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating our 25th.  Do people even celebrate their 30th?  Well, I guess people don't really do like they did when we were kids with big shindigs because no one seems to go to that kind of thing anymore.  (Yet one more thing Gen X was screwed out of.  Tell me our families weren't the only ones that had big 25th anniversary parties?)

The other day I was out cutting back dead zinnias and harvesting some for the table and saw this lil guy pollinating the petunias:

Are the Mr and I the only ones who have never seen a hummingbird moth??  It was crazy and totally flitted around like a hummingbird but loved hanging out in petunia hammocks at will.  Two big ol bumblebees hung out with me while I tended to the zinnias.  Remember back when we were kids and you'd kind of immediately swat or freak if there was a bee anywhere around you?  Now you realize they don't give a crap about you so you can garden together in harmony.

Oh and here's those zinnias:

I put in two new versions of spinach and we'll see if anything happens because the "easy to grow" spinach has been laughing at me all friggin' season.

Now let's get to:

Groove Before You Snooze — How Music Can Help You Get Out of a Sleeping Rut (Whatever works, I'm down with!  One of these should help with that too and I can vouch for this one for making gardening chores go by faster!)

Move Over, Calcium: These 5 Nutrients Are Crucial for Bone Health Too  (I'm thinking most people here are in the group that needs to be paying attention to this.  😜  I track my food in Cronometer and I'm always lower on magnesium so I started this new to me magnesium at night.  (2-3 hours after my statins of course) )

The Sit-Up Is Over  (I hear this more and more and it's hard to believe anything other than that can make your abs burn like that the next day.  For various reasons, the Mr and I are unable to do full on planks but I'll tell you what does work your core.  Dead bugs.  Even the act of laying on the floor and pulling your knees to your chest was almost impossible when we started back into strength.  Windshield wipers are also a favorite of mine but for us Gen Xers and older, it feels hard to banish this old standby.)

8 Fruits That Will Help You Sleep Better  (Wow, I would've thought most of these would zap you awake.  Didn't know how many had natural sleepy enzymes!)

New EPA data show more towns have PFAS in their water. Is yours one?  (Welp, this is bad especially when the data was collected protections were in place.  This along with constant construction in our area is also why we have not one but two filters for our water.  We have a whole house filter that honestly, was WAY cheaper than we thought (plumber installed) and use charcoal filters that remove a ton of stuff including chlorine.  Then we use the fridge filtered water for all cooking/drinking.)

Medicare covers at-home nursing care for dementia patients for the first time this year  (OMG, this is a long time coming!  We only have one place covered so far in our state but if you or someone you know needs assistance check the map in the article.)

7 Sneaky Things to Check for in Every Airbnb Listing  (These are good tips that I use for my VRBO's.  I don't use ABB anymore after our wallet learned that if you have to cancel a trip that you do NOT get your travel insurance cost refunded for a trip you're no longer taking like VRBO does.  Another tip is to unplug ALL Alexa's and smart devices in the house because they can listen to you.  (Just don't forget to plug in before you leave.)  I will say "I did NOT give consent to be recorded inside which is against the terms of use of your rental platform.  Okay byeeee" *unplug*  I always unplug their alarm clocks  because of the light but lots have pinhole cameras and 4 out of 10x some ahole has set it to go off in the middle of the night.  Ask me how I know!  Also sweep for cameras/listening devices in sneaky places.  Sounds paranoid but there are literally hundreds of stories about this yearly for hotels and rentals. Travel with these not just for suspicious pinholes to cover just in case but you know how there are always blaring lights on electronics at night.   Always check the wifi too for an unnamed device when you pull up as a tip off to do a sweep.)

Aubrey Plaza Opens Up to Amy Poehler About Grief Following Her Husband’s Death: ‘It’s a Daily Struggle'  (I have to say her description of her grief in relation to the movie she was talking about is so accurate.)

3 Questions for Mark Hamill  (For the Mr and any other Hamill fans)

I am completely gob smacked that next weekend will be time to celebrate my birthday.  I swear August just started.  I don't get it.  So we'll have to figure out something to get into this weekend.

You getting into anything this weekend?
