Why Is It Raining in the House? Weekend Recap
Guten Morgan this fine Monday. I hope your weekend was a bitchin one and you're ready for a short week. (Or maybe you pup owners are breaking out the Thunder shirts in anticipation of the people who are going to be setting off fireworks for the next seven days. I know we always have people setting them off at random usually starting tonight. I do actually miss sparklers from when I was a kid and conducting a symphony to make shapes in the air burned into your vision.)
Friday was exhausting y'all. I had to get some worm spray for a looper worm infestation on my brassicas (who the hell am I??) and whilst poking around the nursery with lightning and looming thunder Thursday night, I spotted a flat of begonias marked down to $10. Given my zinnias couldn't stay in the long planters because they need sun, I had to relent and buy the begonias. Anything to block the sea hag from peeking over.
So Friday morning I got to work picking off those bastard worms, spraying the leaves with worm spray then digging out the zinnias from the planters, putting them in a bucket and transplanting them out front. I had one struggling in the planter, room for 5 in the side bed and six beside the porch. The difference between the amended soil in the side bed and porch soil was night and day. Pure clay which was a little difficult to stab with the trowel so I used the mini drill auger attachment I got early on and it loosened things up nicely. Then I used the trowel to dig it out and pop the zinnias in. I hope they do okay in that muck. Then I planted all of the begonias and got them back up on the fence. I was thoroughly drenched but saw I had a window before a pop up shower to get the potatoes planted. I've had 5 gallon buckets waiting for this day but had to wait for enough sprouts on regular potatoes and slips with roots in the water for sweet potatoes. I got those planted, watered and on their new stands with screening tied on to keep pests out. I was DRENCHED and went up to take a cold shower. I was so hot my Google Pixel watch turned off and gave me a warning it was warm and was cooling down. I putzed on the phone while sitting under the fan and when I went to grab the watch, the face wasn't showing up. I gave it to my tech guy and he tried a double button reset. Then we put it on the charger and it flashed the ⚡ emoji and that was that. ☠️ That's okay, I don't need to track my steps or calories. I knew there was a reason I didn't throw away the old Polar when the Mr passed that down to me. So it's on the charger downstairs ready for this weeks workouts. I hope I remember how to work it but a $350 replacement is not happening.
So we're finishing up our back and bi's strength sesh when the Mr goes to put on his shirt. It's wet. Now we got quite the downpour during our workout and there were parts of his shirt wet, the backpack it was on and a piece of furniture and you know, not like we were storing spare flooring there. He pulled boards off to see if it was the spigot. Nope. The register vent underneath had water dripping down it.
How is this happening?! Clearly it'd been happening for a while because a part of the subfloor was now black. We went up to look above it and it sounds like where the fridge is. We already have a water sensor there just in case so it should've gone off if that was the problem. I also have a cleaning tool that is flat to get underneath it for dust bunnies and I put it under and it wasn't wet so it wasn't the fridge after pulling it out. The Mr pulls off the register cover for the one leaking and you can see there is water between the subfloor and our laminate floor!
Yes warping our floor and forcing us into a new one is on the list right now. 🙄 Because we live in a condo, that's a them problem and he called the after hours place at 7:10pm. We were told someone would call us back. Well the house is a wreck so we had to grab a ubiquitous chicken tender dinner to pound as we rushed around the house getting it "service person ready." Now we didn't expect them to come that night especially as it was an hour later and we still hadn't heard back from them so we put some plastic drop cloth over what we considered to be the likely culprit of loose siding that was just replaced within the past 2-3 years. We got the call he was on his way around 8:20pm as he was finishing a job and said he'd see us in a bit. 10pm is when he rolled up and we figured he'd inspect and they'd put in a work order to be ignored holiday week. We point out obvious loose siding and the open seam lines up with where the leak is. He seems to think it's our window and there are gaps blah blah. Well windows are our responsibility. We keep pushing back and told him the windows were flush when they were installed back in 2018 but now they aren't since the siding people came in. (There have been all kinds of problems with the siding too.) He did nail in some of the siding and I cringed and wanted to yell "no!! You'll bring Hagzilla to the door" and sure enough she was out there within three minutes with her passive aggressive BS and I shut her down pretty quick. Even the guy eventually shot her a dirty look like STFU and that sent her back inside. Look, it was 10:30pm by then so I get it but she is just...ugh. 🖕
He said he could seal the gap in the window top and I asked how much he would charge (since he kept insisting it was the window) and he said "look, I'm writing this up as loose siding and someone needs to come out with the nail gun and fix it and I sealed where necessary so as far as I'm concerned, it's the associations issue."
"Fix her up then."
That took longer than it should have (me thinks he charges by the hour) but he did it and did say "look, I don't even know if this is the issue but the moisture meter led me there so it's a start." I had a comeback for that too just to let him know, you can't tell me there's all of this loose siding and it has nothing to do with it. So we had to hope no pop ups happened overnight and for as long as possible the next day for curing time. And that was all just FRIDAY!!! I was so exhausted and spent and praying that did something. We can't do anything about the subfloor until the association gets involved in case they need to see it.
Saturday I had a conundrum because all week I wanted to do an afternoon tea, bought all of the ingredients needed (in addition to some I'd squirreled away) but I was supposed to have been able to do the prep work the night before. I couldn't do that waiting for the service schmo to get there because he'd need to be in the 1 1/2 butt kitchen to inspect where the water was coming down. I wasn't making scones at 11pm so I had to fight through the "I don't wanna" for an hour to prep everything. I have a few scone mixes from King Arthur and with it being summer, raspberry it is. (One of their best flavors so far.) I had the Mr clean and assemble the afternoon tea platters and we were ready to roll by about 12:30pm.
We had the soundtrack to The Longest Week on our afternoon tea list so it felt very French. It was nice and filling and we watched some episodes of Gardener's World with Monty Don, as one does. It was a pretty chill day but then we started talking about adult stuff again and it was like ugh, afternoon tea high gone. At least we got to get a peek of the glow from the petered out Stowe Balloon Fest on the webcam.
Sunday we had leftover scones, coffee and 'tea scraps' left from the previous day and got sucked into a 2 hour Naked and Afraid episode. The Mr got to doing maintenance stuffs like changing out the water, air and fridge filters while I switched dishes and reloaded the dishwasher and edited pics. Then the Mr asked where the sander was. Sigh. He did what I asked him to Saturday as I told him the bondo slathered newel post has given me extreme anxiety but I am terrified to sand it too so push me to do it Sunday. He did. I strapped on a mask and tried the sander but it was really only successful at knocking off the blobs before the sandpaper would clog up. So hand sand it was. I spent a half an hour doing that and between using a sanding block under a piece of 150 grit paper as well as a pot scraper and a chopstick, I think I got it as smooth as I could. I might go over it with a 400 or 800 just before painting but I'm glad my honey pushed me to do it.
Then it was 4pm and time for afternoon nibbles with the last of the leftover afternoon tea bits.

Curry chicken salad on a mini croissant, zucchini & cream cheese on rosemary olive oil crackers, a 1/4 slice of sour dough with a slather of raspberry jam and a square of TJ's 72% dark chocolate. |
If you've never had curry chicken salad... do it! You have to use this specific curry powder though that isn't overpowering because I've tried a few and this is perfectly blended and I don't even like Thai food that much. Chicken breast, light mayo and a healthy few sprinkles of the curry powder. Delish!
The Mr went back up and got to replacing the thermal paste on the desktop computer. Thank God he knows what he's doing! While he was doing that, I decided to give my friend a call and we ended up chatting for an hour and forty minutes so that shot the rest of the night before baking fish n chips for dinner.

Another weekend in the trenches. That went fast! Hope everyone had a good one.
ReplyDeleteMeh, too hot to cut the grass so it's long and weedy. Grocery shopped and hibernated. Put up doggie gates without checking the walls so 6 holes where there should be 2 lol.
ReplyDeleteThats it lol. A few phone calls and many naps. Big storm last night and I learned Elmer is terrified of storms.
So glad you did your afternoon tea!! You needed that after Friday! Weekend was good here. Met a friend for her birthday breakfast, came home and did a little work, then watched some tv with the hubs. Our old pocket hose burst while I was watering the flowers out back, so I ordered a new one. With all the rain we got last night I won't need to water until Wednesday morning and have the sprinkling can I can fill with the hose out front. Church on Sunday, a relaxing afternoon, a simple dinner with the hubs and the weekend was done. Today is month end so lots of work to be done.
