What I'm Reading This Week #31

Howdy all!  I hope you had a great week!  We've been on the struggle bus a bit this week between us and I have to thank the Mr for really being there for me.  I'll likely go into it next week but for now, let's get to the eats.

Monday was Mahi Tacos which we hadn't eaten in forever.

To carry on the theme was turkey taco Tuesday.

We had BBQ shrimp and grits on Wednesday.

Thursday was back to the General and his chicken.

Now let's get to...

The Travel Industry Is a Total Mess, But Everyone Is Traveling Anyway (We saw an influx in shoulder season at the beginning of May and knew it was going to be a crap show this year.  We had already started looking at a 'just in case' Cmas booking in VT before we even left and nothing was available.  Hawaii is an utter mess on so many levels, it will be years before we can go back.  So sad.)

Vacation rentals can lead to costly invasions of privacy  (You would be AMAZED how many people have left their accounts signed in at rentals we've been at.  While we've never done anything on their accounts, we did add a few extra "unique" movies to their watchlist and sign them out.)

10 Musicians Who Refused to Let "Weird Al" Yankovic Parody Their Songs  (Damn, there would have been some cool ones in there!  Oh and I can't ever hear the beginning of Gangster's Paradise without thinking it's Amish Paradise...fool.)

The Mr mentioned he might go to his hometown earlier this week but I don't know if that's still in the cards or not but he's basically been locked in with me for weeks and I know he needs his downtime.  I'm going to try to keep my mental cool this weekend as I spent several hours in a full blown panic attack that I haven't had that bad in years.  I'm going to try to drink as much water as possible too because I've sucked at it hard for a good 4 months now and I need to get on the train.

What do you have planned for the weekend?

Hump Day Poll: Best Advice

What’s the best piece of advice a family member has given you?

Grandma always said "people don't need to know your business."  I think a lot of that attitude was seeing how gossipy her kids were and still are, just as her own sisters tended to be.  One in particular was known for screwing up a lot but she also told on herself so she gave the others fuel to gossip about her.  It was also implied "if they gossip to you, they'll gossip about you."  That always stuck with me and as a result I carried my cards close to the vest after that just like she did.  I know if I tell my mom something, she would tell my aunt (who would tell her husband and one if not both of her kids) and vice versa if I confided in my aunt.  Now they have a friend who is as close as a sister and she would be included in that as well so I don't tell the family anything I don't want getting out or that is too personal.  It does suck sometimes but I'm thankful to have the Mr and a few really close friends whom I trust to keep my business mine.

Feet Up Weekend Recap

**yawn**

This is the part of the post where something interesting would go that we did with our weekend but it was as non-eventful as you can get.  Unless you consider watching episode after episode of Escape to the Chateau DIY pure excitement.  We were happy to see Movies That Made Us Season 2 came out on Netflix Friday so we watched Back to the Future Friday night before conking out.  Then we blew through the rest of them (Pretty Woman, Jurassic Park and Forrest Gump) on Saturday.  I thought there were more than that but we were sad when it was over.  It reminded me of when JP came out.  I had ZERO interest in seeing it and the Mr was all over it.  We'd been dating about 18 months at that time.  I was babysitting my cousins that summer and since they were handfuls, I promised if they were good all week, we'd do something fun on Friday.  Of course they wanted to see Jurassic Park when it came out and I had to say yes.  The Mr was SO irked I got to see it before he did when I didn't even want to but I made it up to him by taking him because it was so good and is one of our favorite movies.

I'm kind of out of commission right now and the Mr was kind enough to make some meals over the weekend and be a rock for me in general.  He did a great job and I'm so thankful for his help and constant support.  I talked to a few of my friends over the weekend and it did my heart good.

I saw something about podcasts and how everyone listens to them.  I only occasionally listen to WTF with Marc Maron but nothing with any consistency so I'll ask you, any podcasts you listen to on the regular?

Sorry it's a snoozer this Monday!

What did you do this weekend?

What I'm Reading This Week #30

Well hello Friday.  'Bout time!  This week has dragged quite extensively and we're both done.  Not that some grand plans are in the works but still, who wants to have their days mucked up with work?   I saw that Grandma's place sold and it went for over asking.  At this point, we're all just glad to have that chapter closed since none of us ever felt like it was her place anymore once he moved the hooch in.  I guess they had to clean the carpets, ducts and every surface and it still couldn't get the smoke/drug smell out.  I was surprised it went for more given that fact and I guess I'm glad I didn't see it one last time or I'd probably need bail if I saw him again.  I hope from this point on that I won't ever have to hear the criminal's names in the same breath as his...or I'd be good with never hearing his again either but I digress.

Let's get to da eats.

Monday was steak, tater and veggies.

Workout was MBF Upper Body.

Tuesday was General Tso's chicken.

Workout was a modified T25 Cardio.

Wednesday was Brussel flatbread pizza.

Workout was 3 miler around Grandma's cemetery.

Last night was orange roughy, rice and veggies.

Workout was a 3 miler around a park.

Now let's get to...

6 Things You Didn’t Know a Physical Therapist Could Help With  (Wish I knew the last one when my MIL was suffering with it.)

How to Recover If You Were 'Parentified' As a Child  (I thought by the title this was a load of BS...then I read it.  Adult children of divorce may identify.)

Why You Need to Keep an Empty Vegetable Oil Bottle Under Your Sink at All Times  (This is actually a great idea and I'm probably the last to know)

The Truth About Childfree People  (The judgment is real and as this proves, some of us are doing just fine.  Thankfully I'm now past the age where people can give me the BS, invasive lines like "it's different when it's your own", "you'll change your mind", "who will take care of you when you're old" (guess what, not necessarily your kid!) and my favorite "you're selfish."  I think the most selfish thing you can do is jump into having a child because it's what is expected of you.  Some of us had a parent who didn't realize they weren't cut out for it until it was too late.)

Beware Of 'Shrinkflation,' Inflation's Devious Cousin  (We are seeing this with EVERYTHING which seriously ticks me off.  I would rather you raise the price than act like you don't bump in the bottom of a hummus container to charge me the same for an ounce less.  Oh and this "we have to temporarily raise our prices due to the pandemic" was also a load of crap.  You know those prices are never going back to pre-pandemic levels.)

5 Things in the Kitchen that Concern Potential Home Buyers  (As someone who has scoured Zillow for over 4 weeks, I can say I've seen all of these and thensome.)

As I mentioned, no plans for the weekend that I'm aware of.  I've got some screwed up leg muscles going on from all of the walking we've been doing and I need to spend as much time rolling the feet and doing myofascial release on the shins to try to right it all.  That's as deep as my plans go.  Try not to be jealous!

Tell me you're doing something more fun than that!

Hump Day Poll: Cartoon Capers

(Source)

What cartoons did you watch as a kid?

Tom & Jerry, Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny/Tex Avery, Captain Caveman (which isn't that funny when you watch it as an adult), Schoolhouse Rock.  On Saturdays, The Smurfs even though they annoyed me, The Littles (also annoying).

When I was a little older, Muppet Babies, Garfield and Friends and Ren and Stimpy.

Then when we were engaged/married the good Adult Swim stuff like Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021 (looks around...they were wrong), Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law.

Which have you watched from childhood to adulthood?

Stay Off the Sites Weekend Recap

Happy Monday everyone!  I hope you're ready to pounce on another week.

(tenor.com)

As usual, the Mr and I couldn't stay off of the real estate sites and I found a place in the country that I fell in love with.  Not as much for the main house but the fact it had this separate house that some of you will be appalled by but I instantly fell in love with.

We would get anything electrically in line and use that as our "hygge house."  Whenever life is a bummer...head to the hygge house with a book, look out at the hydrangeas and chill.   Since it's not officially on the market yet, we thought we'd drive by to see what the neighbors looked like and how far it was commute wise.  Well, that killed it.  Not necessarily commute wise and that podunk is being kind as a descriptor but right across the street and I mean basically driveways lining up is a scrap metal place as well as the local shooting range up the road.  Now I don't mind some good ol boys as neighbors but I don't want the sounds of random gunshots, dogs barking and whatever sounds a scrap metal place makes interrupting the peace we jumped back into a mortgage for.  Not gonna lie, I cried a little.  Plus there's a beautiful barn but it's in need of major repair and I don't know that 1) we could justify paying for the expense when we'd have nothing to put in it (SOOO many windows out on it so we'd be constantly chasing wildlife out of there) and 2) if it had to come down, I would feel like a wrecker of history.  A lot of the places we really like seem to be ruined by a street view or a drive by.  I guess they'll be peeling us off the floor here when we die.

As I was perusing other homes, I stumbled upon Grandma's house being up for sale.  That wasn't pleasant.  What was weird (non-believers, skip this) was I started getting a LOT of her non-traditional name popping up the previous four days.  The first few times I chalked up to coincidence but then it was happening about 2-6x per day which I couldn't ignore.  The 'coincidences' started, according to Realtor.com, the day the house went on the market.  I don't know why I didn't think to check.  I guess I just assumed someone would give me a heads up it was on the market but you know what they say about assuming.  So that took some processing seeing the house where we spent so many holidays barren and looking small.  It still has her colorful wall color choices and wallpaper borders that she liked to put up because she had the patience for it.  So it feels like a part of her is still there but they will likely be the first things someone else will remove.  The pictures taken are utterly HORRIBLE.  It's like someone found an old Nokia phone in a box in the attic and was like "this'll do."  Apparently they don't care if it sells fast or not.  It still would've been nice to be asked if I wanted to take a final look around but I'll give the benefit of the doubt that they assumed after he moved that thief into the house that I'd want nothing to do with it.  Still...would've been nice to be asked.

Movin' on.

Sunday we slept in a bit which I was grateful for since I seem to be getting to bed later and later.  We had some Caulipower veggie pizza and salad for lunch, drove by a house we were making sure was crossed off the list due to the neighborhood and went for a walk in the cemetery nearby.  It was quite warm and I was glad to cool off with a Yasso yogurt bar when we got home after a quick rinse off in the shower.  We found Escape to the Chateau DIY on Peacock and watched quite a few episodes of that which is watching other people buy their chateaus and give it a go.  Obviously, I found one for us that we could afford, that I loved and now we're going to move to France without knowing the language.  It's not a chateau more than it is a hamlet but I'll still take it.  The Mr got the laundry done, and I got dinner made before settling in for a little Sunday night tube watching.

That's about it on our end.

Do anything this weekend?

What I'm Reading This Week #29

Happy Friday everyone!  Anyone else on vacation?  It seems like almost everyone I know is on sabbatical.  It's been a mix of hot, humid and marginally tolerable weather this week and we've made it out to walk for four days...some of them we regret because it's not until lap two you're like "dammit...mistake.'  I think I made a mistake jumping the gun on getting Netflix for 2 months because I thought there was more on.  I was desperate enough to watch Thunder Force if that tells you anything.

We were doing our 'workshop Wednesday' (marriage therapy) and the Mr found this guy on YouTube and he found a few videos for us to watch after our usual session.  It seems the more current ones are aimed toward parenting but a deeper dive has some good stuff for anxiety and/or self worth.  It can be a little hard to feel like you're not getting Rick rolled or should look out for Howdy Doody.  Check him out if you're bored after that hard sell.

Let's get to the eats.

Monday was orange roughy, brown rice and broccoli.

Workout was three miles around park.

Tuesday was chicken quesadilla with Brussels and I was so excited about it, I forgot to take a pic.  Workout was 3 miler around Grandma's cemetery

Wednesday was BBQ Shrimp and Cheese Grits.

Workout was a two miler.

Thursday was General Tso's Chicken with cauli-rice.

Workout was resistance bands.

Now you can no longer resist...

Bad Walking Habits Every Walker Should Quit, Say Experts  (You know what?  I don't know that I swing my arms at all.)

How Stress Hits Women’s Brains Harder—and Why Men Don’t Always Get It  (This is some serious knowledge here.  Every man needs to read this.)

Stuck In A Rut? Sometimes Joy Takes A Little Practice  (That first friggin paragraph could've been written by me.)

In Toxic Families, How a Scapegoated Child Is Chosen  (It's like they knew I was reading a book on the subject!  I'm the sensitive one, btw)

'You're not being helpful': Valerie Bertinelli slams troll who criticized her weight  (How many of us can relate to this tearful video by Valerie?  Couple that with her new book about accepting herself as she is right now at her age and it's particularly heartbreaking.  You can be on a path that you believe is going to serve you better and one asshole can spin you off your axis.  Hang in there girl!  Many of us are still fighting the lifelong battle with you!)

I surprised the Mr with a delivery from Portillo's.  Last weekend he said if he could have anything, it would've been a Maxwell Street Polish and since it's been a year since we had any, I figured it was time.  So that arrived yesterday and that'll be consumed at some point tomorrow along with a crap ton of water to wash out the flood of sodium to go along with it.  Worth it.

Any plans for the weekend, my lovelies?

Hump Day Poll: TOO Good of an Actor

What actor/actress played their character so well that you can’t watch them in any other show or movie without seeing that character?

Peter Krause will ALWAYS be Nate from Six Feet Under to me.  I've followed all of the actors to their respective shows since but I can't see that sweet grin and not yell out "Oh NATE!"  Even now on 9-1-1 while he's nothing like Nate, you see how much of his own personality he brings to every character but I saw those characteristics first as Nate who I fell in love with instantly.

How about you?

Desperation TV, Air Fryers and Dry Biscuit Weekend Recap

Good Monday morning to you!  Ready for a new week?  Me either but here it is.

We didn't do much.  Tried a new to us biscuit place that was meh.  If biscuits are your business, there's no excuse for them to be dry and crumbly especially within an hour after you open.  Even gravy couldn't save the Mr's biscuit but he seemed to like his though.  We went for a drive but it was raining and on the way home people were insane.  It seems like as much as it sucks being cooped up, it sucks equally going out and dealing with people's stupidity.  Sadly, I know of 3 people who are fully vaxxed and sick with Covid for 2 full weeks so far with no letting up.  I'm really worried about my friend because he's got every pre-existing condition you could have that isn't good and I'm not ready to honor his request of dumping his ashes at a particular beach on the downlow.  So glad we didn't get into that mentality of "we're vaxxed!  Burn the masks!"  Not that two of them did but one was like "I'm hot" at his new job and didn't wear it anymore and that was that then gave it to my friend when he came home every night.  Sigh.

We watched more Ghost Adventures out of desperation for something to watch than I care to admit and two of us started watching The Monster Squad Saturday night but only one of us was awake halfway through.  😏

Sunday morning we watched some Bob Barker era TPIR on Pluto TV until 11am.  I made brunch of an omelet, whole grain toast and half a sweet potato.  By then the rain had moved past and we thought a walk around Grandma's place would be good but it was humid when the wind wasn't blowing which was about 50% of the time.

(I always feel like...somebody's watching meeeee)

We had some old people conversations so it wasn't the most mentally relaxing of walks but it made the time go faster if nothing else.  When we got home, we both showered because we were gross messes but it was nice to have it out of the way by 4pm and got in our first 3+ miler there.  I did get a little bit of the living room picked up and put away a mountain of clothes in the bedroom.  Baby steps.

Last night after the walk and such, I threw a steak on the grill, FINALLY used the air fryer my MIL gave us like a month or so ago for baked potatoes and green beans.

We settled in for some Renovation Island (or Island of Bryan for you Canucks) and chilled the rest of the evening.  Not a super eventful few days but there it is.

What did you get into this weekend?

What I'm Reading This Week #28

Hello all!  I hope you had a great week and are ready for a rockin' weekend!  I think we are though I don't know what rockin' will be happening.  Oddly, the week didn't drag as much as a short week typically does so that's a plus!

Here's a peek at what we've been putting in the face holes this week.

Monday was vegetarian "taco" salad.

Exercise was a walk around the cemetery earlier in the day and LIIFT4 Chest and Tri's

Tuesday was Shrimp over sweet potato 'noodles' and caramelized onions with brown butter.

Workout was a crap fest of Cize from Beachbody on Demand.

Wednesday was BBQ chicken lavash pizza with pineapple and Brussels.

Workout was P90x3 CVX.  (Strength/cardio combo)

Thursday I had to tank my original plans and went for easy with low sodium pasta and salad.

Workout was a deceptively hot 2+ miler at Grandma's cemetery.

Now let's move on to...

5-minute breathing workout lowers blood pressure as much as exercise/drugs  (I need to do this (I already have the machine) because my lung capacity sucks and if I can get more stamina and some cognitive improvements too?  Yes please)

5 Harmful Myths About People with Anxiety (Absolutely!  If non-sufferers didn't get it during the pandemic, please be kind to others trying to get through each day with it.)

The 6 Biggest Pet Peeves Home Stagers Have About Your Bathroom  (Not sure how I feel about the last two.)

Why You Make Grunting Noises Every Time You Sit, Stand And Bend Over  (If there was an Olympic sport for this, I'd be racking up the gold.)

We Are Gen X, And We Don’t Give A F*ck If You Think We’re ‘Cheugy’  (I don't know, care or want to get schooled on what cheugy (chew-gee) is, what it means and why I'm 'not allowed' to say it without being lame.  Reason #1,238,276 why we didn't have kids.  I am Gen X and literally (actually mean literally) unimpressed.)

Go Inside Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton’s Fairytale Wedding Ceremony  (Their wedding cake was a replica of her parents which is so sweet but it's also very similar to our wedding cake right down to the sugar cherubs!)

Nothing on tap that I'm aware of.  We both agree a purge is looming...let's see if we get the gumption to do it or not.

You got something fun planned?

Hump Day Poll: BLAM!

What was the most recent thing that you were just going along, minding your own business and...

something/someone completely out of the blue startled, shocked or shook you?

It doesn't have to be some life changing thing, like mine for example...

The other night before bed I'm scrolling my Google feed when my brother in law's face pops up in an article out of nowhere!  This is a dude who has brought nothing but arrogance, bullying and narcissistic BS to our lives so trust me when I say seeing that face is the last thing I want to see on a good day much less before I attempt slumber.  😒

Nope Weekend Recap

What's shakin' everyone?  (Anyone else think all four cheeks and a couple of chins, Norm style?)  That'll always be my mental go to.

It was a truly boring weekend to the point I wasn't going to post anything but, here I am.  We watched some fireworks from Detroit the other night and they were really good and that was as patriotic as we got.  I did make some burgers with chips and beans on Saturday and then we tried this new cookie place that was so over the top I felt sick the rest of the night so no dinner.

tenor.com

I'm trying to pull out of a mental glitch with a bunch of stupid crap all coming to a head from health crap to feeling like a caged animal to a fun mid-life crisis.  I've been throwing myself into a new project the past two weeks but its work so I guess it's better to not be 100% focused on how much pain I'm in so I'm going to take that as a positive because books tell me I should.  Fake it til ya make it.
😬

Speaking of books, I've got this one on the way so that should be a 'fun' read.

My friend put her house on the market and we've been anxious to see the pics because it has a lot of land but ultimately, inside it would take too much money to make it our own.  There's a lot of big ticket items coming up like roof, HVAC, etc and I have no desire to pay for them.  Plus it would be kind of weird owning your friend's house.  I feel like there could be some expectations on both ends or maybe I'm projecting.  They're moving four states away anyway, not like they'll see it again.  But we both agree if we're going back into a mortgage, it would have to be for something that just bowls us over and we haven't seen that in 20 years except for that house two weeks ago that was too close to the highway.  Here we'll stay, I'm afraid.  I assume cleaning the house and beginning a purge might go a long way in helping but then where to start.  It all gets overwhelming before you even begin.

Tenor.com

I made a quiche for us to have for a few breakfasts this week...

Eggs, sweet potato, spinach and ground turkey breast.  320 calories a slice with a clementine or something and we should be good to go to not have as big of a food rut, at least this week.  I'm pretty bad at just grabbing the easiest thing which is usually a yogurt and banana or oatmeal if I'm feeling motivated or absolutely nothing if I'm not.

We lucked out with a 75 degree day with wind on Friday so we walked my co-workers cemetery for 2.65 miles before pooping out.  I'd like some more of those please because these 90+ degree days can suck a rock.  (Not what I was going to say.)

Did you guys do anything this weekend?  Any plans today if you have the day off?

What I'm Reading This Week #27

Hello, hello, hello and happy Friday to you all!  I hope you've had a great last week of June and are kicking off July in grand fashion.  If you are, do share...I feel like I wouldn't know grand fashion if it bit me in the butt.

We're trying to cram in all of the fringe shows we want to watch before our Discovery+ runs out.  (NO WAY am I paying for that full time.)  I watched that Laundry Guy show and I swear they will make a show about anything...and I will apparently fall for it.  I've got a lot of laundry detergent to go through before making any kind of switch but I'm hoping it will help with the white slipcovers I have to wash soon.  The first episode he's like "don't use dish soap to clean a stain, it's too aggressive."  Well, guess what I used to clean a stain a week prior to watching that.  Mmm hmm and yes, it's now made a lovely whiter circle.  So OxiClean, Castille Soap and some prayers are in order along with a drip dry.

Let's dig into what we're putting in the pie hole this week.

It was so good last week, we had to have the lentil pasta with meatless meatballs again.

Workout was WATP 3 mile walk.

It was turkey taco Tuesday in these parts.

Workout was MBFA Full Body Strength.

Wednesday was General Tso's Shrimp with caulirice, pineapple and stir fry veggies.

Workout was walk around Grandma's cemetery.

Thursday was carrot noodle veggie stir fry with Thai sauce.

Workout was walk around closer cemetery until we almost caught fire from the sun.

Now let's catch...

The 30 Most Popular Fitness Icons of All Time (We still work out with some of them!)

31 Surprising Signs You'll Live to 100  (Interesting theories.)

How ‘Soft Fascination’ Helps Restore Your Tired Brain  (Mine needs all the help it can get)

25 Genius Ways to Fill Up an Awkward, Empty Corner  (A few good ideas.  A few people need to declutter though...yeesh!)

Why Are People Getting Worse at “The Price Is Right”?  (I've noticed that too when I used to watch.  Also, now the visuals are too flashy for me to be able to enjoy the show anymore.  I'm not watching the game show version of Candy Crush.)

Dave Grohl's Badass Lasagna  (This looks so good.  I think I would probably do the sauce in the crock pot.)

I don't think we've got plans this weekend.  I'm not sure if anyone has fireworks going on this weekend but we don't go to those anyway.  I think I'll see if there are some on YouTube or re-broadcasts of some big city's fireworks past if we feel like we have to get a fix.   We've got some grillin' fixin's so that'll be good- now if someone would just come fix it for me.

For my American friends, I hope you have a great (hopefully long) holiday weekend and for the rest of ya's just have a good weekend overall.  Be safe on all fronts if you gather with others!

Any plans on your end this weekend?
