What I'm Reading This Week #34

Hello you sassy beast!  Ready for another flip flappin' fantastic weekend?  Yes indeedy, Ally Sheedy. It's been a week of working ahead for me as I try to work on ideas for holiday posts.  I know, no one is ready for Christmas but spit balling stuff is actually getting me excited for the season.  I like to try to give myself the month of December off from writing new posts (except updating weekly happenings) so all I have to do is respond if needed.  It lets me take a little mental break during the holidays to try to enjoy what I can then hop back into the new year hopefully rested and ready to roll.   We did book our 30th anniversary trip, which is the same one we had to cancel this year and of course got travel insurance.  It's just nice to have something to hopefully look forward to and it makes you go "where the heck did 4 1/2 years go?" because it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating our 25th.  Do people even celebrate their 30t...

Hump Day Poll: For My Gardeners





Given the state of things around these parts, I'm considering gardening to help out a little.  Obviously, I need to be super frugal and I've only truly grown herbs and some stuff in hydroponic Aerogardens which have sadly gone out of business this year so in about 6 months their parts/pods will be sparse.  (Though I'm sure I can use coconut coir for pods)  I've been looking stuff up as much as I can but I thought I'd check with my peeps and see if anyone has any tips for a new frugal gardener with zero room for much more than maybe a raised bed and a few containers.  I'm thinking some spinach, hopefully arugula, peppers and anything else you think would be helpful.  (I know for sure I'll need to make some nets because we have bastard squirrels and munks like we breed them.)

Any tips? Tricks?

    Squirrels and chipmunks are cute and all but when they're stealing your food it's war!

    Back when I did our gardens I had really good luck with the following in both containers and little beds: potatoes, carrots, green peppers and jalapenos, lettuce and spinach, cherry tomatoes, and green onions, and cukes (need stakes though). For herbs, it was cilantro, thyme, chives, basil and rosemary. I did try broccoli and cauliflower one year and got a nice head of each, but only one, so not sure if that was a success or not. Strawberry pots are another option. My mom did those on the deck years ago.

    Tomatoes & cucumbers are usually winners for us. Potatoes are easy too. Peppers will keep producing for quite a while. We like onions too.

    My hubs is the gardener in our house, he's had a lot of success with potato, carrots, beans, rutabaga, spaghetti squash, tomato, spinach and strawberries. All in containers or small beds. He had enough potato to last us until Christmas last year. And I live in Newfoundland which has a VERY short growing season!
