Then It's Forced Upon You

You know those days when you've got stuff to get done but you know you're going to get distracted and it's going to pile up on you?  That's what I was feeling Tuesday morning.  I knew there were things I needed to get done around the house for an impending contractor appointment today.  I woke up and told myself to take the advice of a vlogger I follow and tackle one spot in the kitchen at a time.  I was about to make the Mr some rice for his lunches and put on a kettle of tea when the power went out.  There's construction going on about 1/4 mile up the road and I assumed it was them.  Then about 10 minutes later we heard a buttload of sirens...I should say maybe two more than we usually hear on a normal day so we figured there might've been an accident.  I said a prayer for the person/people whose lives may have been changed and surveyed what was now forced upon me since distractions weren't going to be an issue.

Instead of the oatmeal I was going to have, I had to grab some shredded wheat and a banana.  The Mr came down and he drove a few blocks up to where there's a light and saw it was out and came home.  He wanted to make sure it wasn't because we'd just switched electric carriers a few days earlier and they somehow screwed us.  I opened all of the doors and windows to let some light in, turned on the fireplace to keep the house warm then after breakfast I worked on my one little spot in the kitchen and got a good amount of that cleaned up.  The rest of the stuff required hot water and I didn't want to use what was in the tank if it could wait.  I grabbed a book the Mr got me off of my wish list for Christmas.

I got two full chapters in before the power came back on.  The journey of self-discovery, healing, and all that jazz continues.  I definitely saw a lot of things I could relate to with both parents so I'll be looking forward to how I can undo some stuff and get my mind right.  I figure five stars from 700 reviews aren't shabby so expectations are high.

I had to keep up and down to a minimum because my legs were SOOOO shot.  Apparently, my lower half does not appreciate the Joel/Autumn combo.  Thankfully on sleigh day, my legs were good all day until that night when I had spasms that were reminiscent of the incident.  I dug in with my Graston tool while watching Police Academy, used my jackhammer, and used my heating pad.  Despite my efforts, I was still a hot mess so I knew I couldn't be quite as productive on my feet as I'd hoped and would have to limit bathroom breaks to blue and purple because my legs couldn't handle the speed required for red.

(Not gonna lie, got within 5 minutes of red...err...yellow once.)

I got a few more things done then started making the Mr's lunch for Wednesday while we had electricity.  Red, black and brown rice made with bone broth, scallions, broccoli, and BBQ jackfruit.  About 20 minutes after I was done we went out again for about 15 minutes.  It just made it feel like we couldn't count on anything the rest of the day.  I thawed some roasted turkey and knew I could use the grill for dinner if I had to for baked potatoes and veggies.  Thankfully I didn't have to and the power stayed on.  We had turkey, baked fries and green beans then settled in for Police Academy 2 on the couch with the tree on for the last night.

The Mr went into the office and I got to work on this post and then the household stuff I needed to get done.  We've got a sales appointment today and I figured I probably shouldn't still have the tree up.  Sigh.  I put on some picture frame fasteners on the back of the pics in the bathroom since the tabs in them had metal fatigue and were breaking off.  I switch out pics in there for fall and Christmas so that seemed like the better solution but I also had to drill into all of the frames which I'd been putting off.  I got that done and the frames rehung before putting away all of the Christmas stuff from the shelves and taking down the crusty greens I refreshed a month ago.  I am so buying preserved cedar so I don't have to mess with that again!  I kept up the Christmas cards because why not.  After our Turbo Fire 45 workout, I packed away the ornaments.  We got the lights off and the tree unfluffed and I'll be damned if that thing didn't fit into the original small box it came in!  We'll get some space under the stairs again!  Woot!   I'll see if my aunt wants our old one since hers has fallen over twice the past two years, this year breaking her husband's ornament she made him the year they got married.  :-(   If not, we'll donate it.  I'll be sad to see it go but the new one did afford us a less claustrophobic experience neither of us could deny.

Scintillating few days at the homestead.  I'll report back what one company thinks it'll cost to reface our cabinets and put up a backsplash.

Have you had anything forced upon you lately?

  1. claustrophobia is a good description of full Christmas trees. It was hard to pass (on to a friend) our old one, it was so pretty, but the room it took up was just too much, in the living room and the attic.

I now have my mom’s old tree which is super super skinny and only 6’. (I may have mentioned this previously).

I put it on things to make it taller. A wooden box past years, the window seat this year (which I loved).

It only takes 50 ornaments, lights, about 25 picks and ribbon to fully decorate it.

All the decorations fit in one small bin. I now have three bins. Full set of ornaments/picks/ribbon on each bin, each with a different style/color.

There is a set of traditional/red/green handmade type ornaments, a set of gold balls, a set of aqua/silver/white balls. So three very different looks. Super pleased.

I can decorate and dismantle tree very quickly and by myself.

  2. I didn't mind having the tree up longer this time because of the size of the new one. It became a fixture in the room for sure. Glad we got it back in the box too.

  3. Sounds like you got a lot done and can look around and feel good about it. That's always a nice feeling. And how great is it that the tree fits back in the box! Those little things really do make us giddy! Good luck with the contractor. I hope you get some really good information and they are friendly folks.

The only thing I've been working on this week that I perpetually put off is going through my sticky notes and seeing what's useful and what isn't. I was able to throw out a handful of them yesterday after implementing some (such as adding oatmeal to my gardenia plant to green it up as it suffers miserably in the winter), going to the websites I'd written down, and putting away recipes I'd written. I have numerous boxes and bins in our office that are calling to me, so that is next on the agenda.
