Food Review: Halo Top Pancakes and Waffles Ice Cream

Okay, so I think I've finally reached the end of the "regular" flavors of Halo Top that we wanted to try.  When I saw this, it stopped me in my tracks.  I'm a pancake and waffle fan, big time, yo.  Dump some maple syrup on there and I'm a happy girl.  I knew I had to try this and the Mr didn't seem to protest and at 140 calories for splitting the pint, I was down.

Here's a peek at the nutritional info:

The ingredients look pretty standard as well for those who want to know what they're getting into.

Oh my.  A nice maple syrup swirl in there!?  We're starting off on the right foot!

It smelled heavenly as I scooped.  A nice waft of maple goodness letting me know what I was in for.  I couldn't wait to dive into this baby!

So how did it taste?

You're going to have to forgive my tears.

Tears of delight?  How sweet!  No.  Tears of disappointment.  The first lick of the spoon, I got some super weird taste.  I gave the Mr his bowl and didn't show him my face.  He took a bite and kind of had a weird look on his face like he was processing it.  I said "okay, something's weird there, right??"  He took another bite and so did I because I thought maybe I misjudged.  Nope, it tasted weird again to me but he looked like he wasn't hating it so I thought one more tiny bite to see if it gets better.  Let me tell you something...if you have to take repeat bites in case it's going to get better, it ain't gonna get better.  I threw my bowl out.  When a fat woman trashes ice cream, there's a problem.  He said it tasted fake and he threw his out too.  What I tasted was like a super mega stevia aftertaste.  I don't know if we got a bad batch or something but I died a little inside just from potential lost.  Maybe it's better this way.  I don't need the temptation and if done to a way that suits my tastebuds, it could've been dangerous for me anyway.  Sigh.

What "diet" ice cream has been a total miss for you?

  1. When you mistakenly bought a Halo dairy-free, it changed my world! I had no idea dairy-free Halo existed. Toasted coconut is incredible! I can only find it on occasion at a store I don't often frequent - so that works too :-) (otherwise, it might be a problem!! LOL)

  2. I'm not a huge ice cream person. I get a craving a couple times a year, and that's about it. I know now to stay away from this stuff though whenever I do get some.

  3. I don't think I've tried any of the "diet" kind in the containers, but I've tried the ice cream bar ones and none of them have really been spectacular. Passable, but not something I look to buy. Sherbet is probably the thing I would have in my freezer more often. The hubs, however, loves ice cream and all forms of it (except with nuts) so he keeps himself well-stocked. LOL

  4. I've never tried the 'diet' version of ice cream. The closest thing I've ever gotten to is frozen yogurt. I've never seen diet versions of ice cream on Canadian store shelves, but I have to admit I've never looked very hard. I'd prefer soft serve, which isn't available at home, and so I only have it a few times per year.

  5. I noticed erythritol was high on the ingredient list and looked it up. It’s a sugar replacement. I rarely have good luck with foods using alternate sweeteners myself so I’m not surprised you dumped it. Even if they taste good at first the aftertaste lingers.
