"This is not my life"

That's kind of the way I'm feeling these days...every day.

I know, dealing with what finishes to choose on a remodel is definitely a "first world problem" but I think remodeling is probably like childbirth, you forget the pain involved until it's too late.  Last night we picked up our baseboards.  They're very pretty and they're primed and ready to paint...lucky me.

Of course we couldn't find the stair nose in the color we needed and finishing a huge wood one would look stupid so we picked one slightly darker as close as we could get.  For the trim around the slider and other doors, we got light grain pine that I'll stain.  I think we need to get one more though so I'll be staining well into Friday, I'm sure.  The weather isn't looking the greatest for painting today so I'm hoping the storms pass quickly so the humidity isn't thick in the air.

We just got the word late last night that we're on to do this on Saturday.  I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.  We still need to get felt pads for the furniture because we don't have area rugs and since I've seen pretty much every one available and still don't like anything, it might be a while.  *rolling eyes*

Yesterday I started taking baseboards off and numbering them in case it would help him cut the new ones.  I stopped at the living room because I don't want to have the carpet all wonky and pulling away from the walls but I think that'll be my project tomorrow.

I'll also have to cook a little.  I was brought up that when people help you with construction, you feed them.  Of course this used to be the only payment back in the day but we're paying him for his time as well.  So I bought a pork roast that I'll use for BBQ, I'll grab some mac and cheese and another side.  I think I'm baking banana bread the night before for them to grab in the morning and through out the day.  Then if for some reason it bleeds into the night, we'll order a pizza or something.  (Thankfully this falls on high cal day)

So yeah, I've got a busy few days ahead of me!  I was also informed by my body that it does not consider construction/painting as exercise even though I burn the same amount of calories.  It threw a three pound gain at me last week which pissed me off so in addition to all of this extra stuff I'll be doing, we'll still need to stuff in workouts.  Pffft.

I fully expect a tornado dream over the next few days.  (My sign I've got too much going on that I'm not dealing with)

Do you like remodeling?  Do you forget what a pain it is until it's too late and you're knee deep in it or do things go rather smoothly for you?

  1. It's like once we decided on the floor there was no turning back and this is real now. I am glad we are able to get our friend to help this weekend so we can just get it over with and don't have to draw it out. Just think, a week from now we will be enjoying our new floor. We just have to do what work we can do each day until we get to the big day and it will all be worth it.

  2. Remodeling is the WORST. The upheaval of your house, discovering the dirt behind stuff when you move it, and in the corners, when you thought you kept things pretty clean, the taping when you paint (the worst part of painting!), the expense, the work! YUCK! That's why my house looks the same as it did 10 years ago, the last time we remodeled (painted, new carpet, and new furniture). I cannot bear to think about undertaking it all over again. But it's so NICE when it's all done! Good luck!

    1. OMG, we moved the stove out for me to paint and I was HORRIFIED at the crap back there! I was so glad we did because I would've been mortified if we did it right as our friend was here to do the floors!! I set up a reminder to pull it out every 3 months and clean back there and under the fridge!

  3. Getting it done and over with is painful now, but like you said - week from now self will be very happy. You are lucky to have a friend that can come help with a project like this. One of my chores this week is calling to get an estimate on my kitchen floor, and I'm going to ask how much more it would cost to get my bathroom and entryway done at the same time (both tiny spaces). Then I'll get the joy of choosing flooring.

    1. I hope so! Yes, I think he will stop volunteering to do stuff like that though. We don't like to bug him with stuff and any time we've had work done he yells at us to not spend the money for labor and let him do it. You asked for it, bub! LOL

You'll have to let me know if choosing a floor was as hard for you as it was for us. We literally went 8-10 places and still aren't completely wowed. It's hard to pick wood when you HATE grain and knots!

    1. LOL...it's more like an ongoing nuisance. I know once everything comes together it should look awesome but it's the getting there that will likely turn my hair gray like Nancy in Nightmare on Elm St!

  6. I do the same thing with "feeding the help". Always have a spread ready for whoever is willing to lend a hand. I do not enjoy remodeling projects, but I'll do them. I've had friends who get VERY competitive about such things and I never understood that. My home is not to be oohed and aahed over--it's just ours to live in and enjoy. My home is a lot smaller than most of my friends and I live out in the boondocks instead of "in the city" (one person in particular whom I no longer speak would refer to it as a "cute little house"--rude). Anywho, I've learned over time to space things out because I never ever can get it all done like I have planned in my head. We don't entertain at home, so there isn't a lot of pressure to get it all done quickly. I barely have anything hanging on the walls (like it that way) but I do have a couple of wall projects that I'll be working on. The spare bedroom desperately needs to be painted, but needs to be cleaned out first. That is one of my projects when I'm on vacation--the goal is to donate 10 bags/boxes to Salvation Army from that room alone (it's the pack rat room for clothes and other storage). That room needs a total re-haul including window treatments. But I'll do it in increments because I know how I get--I get obsessed and then two hours in I want to run away from home!!

    1. Glad I'm not the only one to feed the help. It's just the right thing to do. :-) We have a "cute little house" but it's physically little and I'd probably shoot back "yeah, there's no way I'd want a bunch of wasted space in a bigger house." (Maybe just another room or two though please) When you're done donating your 10 bags, come over and start working on mine! HA!

    2. My response to the cute little house comment was, "Thank you! It matches the cute little mortgage payment too!" =o) Unfortunately, the taxes are ridiculous so it's way too big a mortgage payment, but no need to share that part... snort....
