In recovery

For a few weeks, the Mr has been convinced he's overtraining especially since he had pretty much every symptom from various websites signs of overtraining.  We talked about scheduling a recovery week but weren't sure if that was wise so close to our vacation in a few months.  While I may have been technically cleared by my chiro of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome...my foot problems are far from over.  There is still a lot of pain involved with my leg muscles and tendons.  But like an idiot, the next day I decided to do Power 90 original which is pretty tame in the array of things I could've done.  I did fighter kicks and x-work which is nothing more than alternating your feet forward and backward and I was cleared for both.  My already pinchy arches didn't appreciate it and gave me a few zingers.  The finisher was balance board work when I went to do my side to side PT exercises and a pain shot up from my arch up into my leg.  Since ignoring my body is what got me into this muscular issue in the first place, I decided I was not willing to risk a major setback and I informed the Mr we were taking a few days off to recover.

Saturday was our normal rest day and I tacked on Sunday through Tuesday.  It was very hard to get used to  and Sunday the itch to exercise was strong and torturous.  I had to tell myself that this was in both of our best interests even if it felt counter-intuitive on some level.  Each day I could feel my feet improving.  I still did my morning stretches to keep my calf muscles in check and the new PT stretches the chiro suggested because I need to build up the tendons on the front of my ankle which made me sore but that was the only soreness by last night.   When we finally got back to it last night with Paul Katami's Ultimate Kettlebell workout, I was glad to be back to it.  I did well and got a good burn...885 calories, which I think is the highest I've gotten with that.  I did balance board work afterward and was a little apprehensive since the last time I was on it the pain sent me shooting off but quick.  Luckily I was able to do all of my PT exercises and during the workout, I felt the lowest amount of arch crampage to date.  I won't lie, my feet are tight so I need to roll them and do some massage to loosen them up.  Tonight is back to cardio so that'll be the real test.

For those who may be tempted to say "it was worth it but too bad you broke your 4 year exercise streak."  I don't consider it breaking our streak at all.  I've always said our streak was we haven't missed X years of scheduled exercise...I never said we exercised every day or whatever.  This was planned scheduled time off.  People doing P90X have scheduled recovery weeks where they do active recovery and other hardcore exercisers schedule complete rest weeks every 6 months as a reset.  I like to think we were somewhere in between.  This was a necessary part to our routine and will make us stronger.

Impromptu Date Night

Monday was not a good day.  There were some potential issues we needed answers on for our vacation that were beyond my control and that doesn't make for a happy Mrs.  There are also pending issues at the Mr's work that are again, out of our control, and I ended up in a big crying heap on the couch.  I suppose I could've turned to food and I would've in the old days so I'm glad that isn't my first instinct anymore.  This Monday was a cap to what was a craptacular weekend.  I really could not take making suckitude a 3 day affair.  I decided I was husband napping the Mr for dinner.

I made some maple sriracha shrimp fried rice, grabbed 2 take out containers from the cabinet, slapped it in there, grabbed forks and napkins and put them in the Mr's insulated lunch box and told him to put on his clothes, we're going out for dinner.  I didn't tell him where but halfway there, by my directions, he knew...the airport.  When we were dating, we used to go watch the planes and smooch.  There's something soothing about watching planes land and take off and wonder where they're going.

We didn't even get there and it was already worth it when we saw this herd o' deer.


We got to the top of the parking garage and again, before we ever parked the drive was worth it with this huge moon to greet us in lieu of the ill timed sunset we missed.


Sorry for the horrible car lighting for dinner but this is the maple sriracha shrimp over whole wheat Israeli cous cous.  It was SOOO good and we had a great view of the city and the incoming planes while we listened to Hawaiian music like Leaving on a Jet Plane by Justin Young.


I snagged a really bad pic of a plane landing.


Then we went inside and perused the stores and the Mr played with toys.  (Yes, I'm married to a 12 year old...aren't they all when it comes to pose-able objects?)


It was a wonderful, last minute way to turn around a poopy few days.

Maple Sriracha Chicken Satay

I'm not a Thai food lover.  I've tried it and I'm just not a fan.  So I honestly have no clue what made me decide to create this baby but man am I glad I did!




The sweetness of the maple peanut butter coupled with the lingering tingle of Sriracha sauce is an awesome combo and honestly, you could pour that sauce on anything and it would be awesome.  Chicken, shrimp, flank steak, a boot.  You get what I mean.  The other thing I love about this?  It's SUPER simple and the sauce is made in the microwave!  Yeah baby!   Let's get to it.

Maple Sriracha Chicken Satay
(2 servings)

8 oz Trader Joe's chicken breast tenderloins
3 tbsp Trader Joe's low sodium chicken broth
2 tbsp Mighty Maple Peanut Butter
1 tsp Sriracha sauce for mild (1 1/2 tsp for a nice but not overpowering heat)
1 tbsp Cafe Iris Pineapple Sesame Sauce (available at Whole Foods)

In a microwave safe bowl, add the chicken stock, peanut butter, sriracha and pineapple sesame sauce.


Microwave for 30 seconds, stir.  (The sauce will be thin and watery at first) Repeat this process for a total of three times/90 seconds with a stir every 30 seconds.  At this point the sauce should coat the back of your spoon and it will thicken slightly as it cools.


Put 1 tbsp of your sauce on the chicken, coating both sides.  (This makes the chicken incredibly tender; don't skip it.)  Marinate for 20 minutes to an hour then thread a bamboo skewer through each piece of chicken.


Using an indoor grill pan (or fire up the grill...give it a test run!), grill the chicken over a medium heat so the sugar in the peanut butter doesn't caramelize to the pan and stick.  I won't tell you how I know that.  Make sure it's cooked all the way through before serving.  (You can finish it off in the oven if you're unsure)


Add the rest of the sauce to all of the chicken.  Quick, easy and delicious!


I've paired this with black barley for the pics but you can add it to tofu noodles, brown rice, a bed of steamed veggies or whatever you like.

Nutritional information for chicken and sauce only per serving:  Calories  244  Total Fat 9g  Sat Fat 1g  Cholesterol 65mg  Sodium 194mg  Total Carbs 15g  Fiber 1g  Sugars 13g  Protein 29g  Vitamin C  2%  Calcium 3%  Iron 7%

Good news and Friday Food Journal

Well I have some news...I am officially cured of my Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome!  I went to the chiro yesterday and the absence of any nerve issues for 6 weeks and the flossing of the muscles that were once bunged up in scar tissue say I beat the part of my diagnosis that scared the crap out of me.  There are some serious horror stories about TTS online and when I beat the 2nd half of this foot issue, I am going to do a series on what I went through so I can give some hope to someone with the same diagnosis.  In my worst depression  over the diagnosis and what I read, I feared surgery that has a moderate success rate, permanent nerve damage and pain that some referred to as a searing ball of fire 24/7.  I am one of the lucky ones and I intend to help others with my story.  As far as pain, yes, I'm still in a good amount of it but we're rebuilding my muscle structure between orthotics (which could still take 6 more weeks for my feet to fully adjust to), strengthening exercises and balance board work to stabilize my muscles to properly support a normal gait.  I have officially been cleared to do any exercise I'd like on a soft surface using pain as my gauge.  I will not be doing plyo but there are some fighter kicks I'm looking forward to doing again.  However I'm on watch for, of all things, walking on hard surfaces.  Based on how bad of a time I had Tuesday after 3 days of walking on hard surfaces, he's working on strengthening a specific tendon to help release the pressure as well as an exercise to strengthen my ass.  Yep, apparently the gluteaus medius (which sits atop your gluteaus maximus so it's more lower back/top of the da butt) has a lot to do with running injuries, screwed up gait (the way you walk) and is typically weak.  So I'll be doing clamshells to strengthen that with every workout and then these one foot stretches just before workouts to help prepare the feet to do their job.  He said these are more "big picture" things but will help in the long run as long as I'm consistent.  So this is good news even though I'm still dealing with a lot discomfort wise.  I think I should be good to go by the time we go on vacay.

But your eyes might've glazed over on that part like the Mr does when I babble about my visits so I'll give you what you came for...the eats.

Sunday was a test recipe that is coming next week.  I think you'll like it, we loved it!  Calories: 326


Monday was spinach chia pasta with a test sauce and a Hawaiian sweet roll.  Recipe will be coming up in March but it was YUMMY! Calories:  684


Tuesday was half of a small fryer chicken with thyme, roasted garlic and bay leaf and roasted small potatoes.  Calories:  624

 Wednesday was fish taco with broccoli slaw and arugula and side of brussels with asiago and 1/2 slice center cut bacon.  Calories:  516


Thursday was TJ's crab stuffed pacific flounder over thai lime rice and brussels.  Calories:  658



We had some dang good eats this week!  I haven't peeked on the scale so I hope the downward trend continues even though my water has kind of sucked.  

Our friend comes to pick up the treadmill today.  The Mr will be sad to see it go but it's going to a wonderful home.  That's all we can ask for.

Not a fan

I'm going to go on a mini tirade here.  Yesterday, you might've seen the pic with the hole in the ceiling in our bathroom?  If you don't remember, here it is:


In seeing the rat's nest of wires just kind of hanging out up in the attic and the new fan saying the electrical was on the other side, the Mr knew it wouldn't reach.  We made an appointment with these electricians that we used before and had a great experience so why not use them again.  They knew they would be installing a bathroom fan and running a junction box in the attic.  They had two guys that were here last time, both had no problems shimmying up into the attic so there was no reason to be concerned...until I opened the door.

First off, the guy was 30 minutes late which put me in a grumpy mood to start.  Then when I opened the door, there before me stood an older dude, 5'6", easily in the upper 200's to low 300's with baby T-Rex arms that were NOT going to be able to stretch like the Mr's did.  I thought "oh well, don't judge a book by it's cover, maybe he's still got it going on and won't have a problem."  But I'll admit, I was concerned.  If the Mr couldn't hoist himself into the attic (there's a plywood "chute" all the way around the opening in the attic) then I had no clue how this guy was going to do it unless he had an ejector seat to rocket himself up there.  I go up and show him the fan, tell him to get to it and we go our separate ways.  He's up there fartin' around for an hour before coming down telling me there's a problem.  He said "I can't get up in the attic and that needs to be installed up in the attic."  I said "I know, that's what's on the work order."  He said he'd have to call two other guys to come out and install it because the ductwork was rigid and would need to be cut and re-routed and...well, and then his voice morphed into Charlie Brown adults "wah wah wah wah wah wahhhhhh" until I heard $300-500 and "we'll be here 4-5 hours."  I laughed in his face.  I said "that's not happening."  He said he'd go to Home Depot to get a standard fan for us.  I laughed again and said no because we know what they have in stock and this was our 2nd fan.  I called the Mr at work and had him talk to him.  He told him to install the junction box and he would see if the friend of ours (who installed the one before it) would take a look at it.  He installed the electrical and left.

Thankfully our friend was able to install the box and NO the ductwork did NOT need cut, re-routed, etc and he was done in an hour.  THAT is what ticked us off is that this guy basically lied.  Our friend took one look at it and said we didn't need all of the ductwork and stuff we bought and he hooked it right up.  The guy we paid to be here basically didn't want to do the job or was incapable of doing the job and gave me that ridiculous estimate to scare me away from wanting to okay the job.  I knew the length of time he was saying was a load of crap anyway.  Then the Mr finished the job installing the fan/light.  Poor nugget.  He came straight home from work and into that and was working on it until 8:30pm.  We also felt horrible asking our friend to do that when he was coming straight from work too.  We tried to pay him and he refused and said that's what friends are for.  He's such a keeper!  Not many people like that anymore.

I'll be honest, I'm not crazy about the thing.  It looks like a portal to another dimension.


But I'm proud of the Mr for his part in installing it, grateful for our friend to be able to help us out and even I screwed it to the ceiling so for all of that, I'll live with it.  It's either that or builder grade ugly plastic-y crap and I'm not down with that.  But the Mr has showered and said the mirror barely fogged and there wasn't water all over the walls so that's already reason enough to keep it.

Randomness

This has not been a good foot week.  I'm growing really tired of this crap.  It's been just over 2 months I've been dealing with this injury and I'm growing impatient.  I walked quite a bit Saturday, maybe 2-3 hours and my foot was pinchy.  It became obvious to me I need to be on it more for it to reshape.  So the next day was grocery day and we were out for about three hours and my foot was really bothering me.  We gave it a rest and went out later on out of necessity for about another hour.  Monday I felt like it was a little better then we went on a hike.  It was flat most of the time with some wet, gravelly trail thrown in there but it was enough to make me limpy yesterday morning.  Thank God it was a strength day because I couldn't have done cardio on that sucker.

Today we have an electrician coming over to fix some shady wiring and install our bathroom fan.  We've used them before so I'm glad to not have a flaming fire hazard so close to where we sleep.  I'll take final pics once everything is done in there.


Then tonight a friend is coming to help the Mr hoist the tread-monster to the garage for easier loading Friday when our friend comes to pick it up.  I'm glad that'll be done.  Hopefully it'll be done sans hernia or thrown out back.

I have a couple of vacation workouts I'm trying to throw together before the summer sneaks up on me.  I'd like to actually exercise a few times a week this time on the days we're less active.  My brain has pretty much given up any more body weight exercises so I need your help.

Name three exercises I can do in a "hotel room" (we rent homes-no gym available) or a pool.  Pick up where my brain fry left off.

Presidents Day with my Mr

How romantic that sounded.

We had yesterday off so we decided we'd take our workout outside.  Well, I did.  Of course I forgot my camera and we had some of the best lighting and things to take pics of. It was 50 degrees which is usually very doable but with howling winds the whole time, I think we lost a good 10-15 degrees.  We walked for two miles and it felt like four.  It started with this stair hike...

Sadly this was not yesterday.

You might remember it from previous hikes.  This was the first time we did this since my injury.  My feet did okay on the stairs, it was my lungs that were burning and I thought I was going to have a heart attack.  That's what happens when high impact is out of the picture for 2 months.  Well actually they always give me fits but this one was pretty bad.  When we got to our halfway point in the hike across the lake, we sat at a picnic table and lamented over the hike back.  It was soooo windy and cold.  Whose stupid ass idea was that??

Oh yeah...mine.

I burned 860 calories which was okay.  I could've burned less and still felt like I got a good workout in because I was sore and my legs were like jello.  We made it back somehow and I had to pee so bad that I was willing to use the port-a-potty provided.  There were actually two so we decided to go in at the same time in each one.  I had my rear exposed and ready to sit when something told me to turn around again and thank God I did.  There was a big ol' poo log on the seat.  REALLY!?!?!  I mean, how do you miss a big hole?  Something tells me it was done intentionally.  This happened in retail quite frequently in my teen years and a friend confirms it still does.  People are disgusting.  I mean, can you imagine if I'd sat down!?  *barfing*  I told the Mr about my unsavory discovery on the black toilet seat and he cleaned his up so I would have a less grody toilet to use.  Chivalry is not dead.

On our way back, the Mr pulled into a pet store so we could love on a furry nugget.  I saw this little brindle, kind of unattractive to most, little long hair Dachshund.  He was pawing at the window at me and that was all I needed.  He was easily distracted, wiggly, looked like a 90 year old man and had little round biscuit paws.  The girl said she loved him and called him "Grandpa Ralph."  The name totally fit.  He would play a little, get distracted a lot and because of his unwieldy body as he was trying to hop up, fell backwards and knocked his wee noggin.  That settled him down.  I scooped him up and smooched his head and the Mr made him follow his finger with his eyes.  He seemed okay.  I hope he gets adopted, he was so unusual looking but sweet.  I'd name him Curmudgeon or Gramps if we got him...we're not but you know, hypothetically.

We came home and I had half of dinner already made so within 10 minutes we were ready to go.  That was nice.  I still had a hard time getting warm though so the Mr made us some hot tea.  I am trying to convert to stevia but am having a hard time.  That stuff is NASTY!  I've tried it in every incarnation and it tastes like cardboard.  I wish it wasn't so expensive.

So all in all, it was a nice way to spend a day off.

I also got the good news that a friend of ours who is a runner will take our treadmill!  She's a wonderful girl and she is having to go to the gym to get her incline running in and it's a big time suck for her so she was thrilled.  There's nothing wrong with it, it's just unfortunately wrong for us at this point in time.  So once she brings her muscle men over Friday to get it, we can order our elliptical.  We've tried it out and it's nice and smooth so we're looking forward to some new workout blood in the dungeon.  I also noticed a huge rip in one of our Ripcord resistance bands and they have lifetime replacement so we're getting that taken care of.  I think they're going bad right on time so we're glad we went through a place that will replace them.  She even encouraged us to check all of our bands so they could replace any with the slightest sign of wear so we could save on shipping.

Weekend ramblin's

I wonder if there will ever be a weight where sitting in those cheap plastic chairs will not almost send me into a white knuckled panic attack?  I mean, skinny chicks have broken those things!
Not the exact chair but close.

We went out of town this weekend and hit this pub and the only place to sit was on their cold patio where there were just plastic chairs.  I wanted to say "I'll wait 20 minutes for a booth thanks."  (There's a phrase my uber fat self never thought she'd utter!  Before it would've been "I'll wait 45 minutes for an armless chair table, please" or more likely "let's get takeout.")

Just the act of sitting down requires concentration and thigh strength.  There's always that initial hover, then light lowering of your butt onto the seat and then that "settling" of your load on the plastic legs.  There is always that little jolt on the legs of the chair.  It's the moment of reckoning where it decides if it's going to hold your girth or drop yo fat azz in front of 110 people.  You just pray you don't end up on YouTube with the sound of your body hitting the floor and scream of terror and "nooooooo God, not like this!" slowed down and auto-tuned into a song that'll get you on Ellen.

I'm happy to report I ate me fish n' chips in the upright position for the entire meal but man, I don't think I'll ever be comfortable in those things.


I drank a can of Pepsi with dinner Saturday.  It was good but yeah, there was my Pepsi for the year.  It sounded like Satan emerging from the bowels of my gullet every time I belched, which embarrassingly, was often.  Thank God we weren't around people at that time or they would've ran to stand in doorways while the house shook.  It still blows me away that we would go through a 2 liter of that easily on the weekends.  No one needs 32 oz of pop in a day yet I think those are considered "large" if you order a value meal these days.  Ugh, I get a stomachache just thinking about it.  We never even set out to cut out pop on the weekends, it just somehow happened and now the Mr will buy a 12 pack of Vanilla Coke that lasts him an entire year when he would've blown through those in a week several times over because it used to be a summer only thing so he figured suck it down while he had the chance.  Funny how things change!

We hit up the Life is Good store.  I love the shirts there.  I found a cool one on clearance...


That is so me and no the fact it's February shan't deter me from wearing it any time of year.  If I get a paper cut I bleed red and green.  I think I'm going to turn on some Christmas music and fire up the Yule Log.

Sunday was grocery day.  I was so not in the mood.  I had a bowl of cereal before we left and because we were lollygagging and I was picking up some extra stuff for new recipes, I got really hungry by the time we hit the last grocery store.  Nutritionally void things were popping into the cart.  Like these...


Now, I really don't regret getting these because even though we never had Twinkies around the house before the Hostess collapse, I heard these were like old school Twinkies...before they got gross.  When the Mr spied them with a big smile on his face, I gave the nod.  I won't lie, they are awesome.  They won't be something we get all the time, probably because we'll never find them again, but even with a Twinkie deal looming with another company, I still won't eat those dry logs.  Long live Cloud Cakes.  Thank you Little Debbie...I think.  Oh yeah, these made their way in there too...

I haven't tried them yet but I'll report back.  I have a feeling they're delicious.

Post Valentine Weigh In

Down 2.

It'd be awesome if we could continue this downward trend because then I would FINALLY be in new weight loss numbers.  So, sadly the extra day of exercise seems to be helping despite our bodies feeling very beat up (I just got out of a 20 minute epsom salt soak...curse you Chalene Johnson and your Chalean Extreme!  Bowlers lunges can suck it!).  I say sadly because we knew this day would come and well, here it is.  The Mr is not happy.  I'm indifferent.  Meh.

My laptop is making some not so nice noises.  Time to get the air in a can out and check the fan cleaned out.  Come on baby, last at least until the end of the year!

No chiro week / Food Journal Friday 2/10- 2/14

It felt really strange not going to the chiro yesterday.  I needed him too since the night before I tried out fighting kicks in Tae Bo to see how my ankles could handle it and they were pretty sore yesterday.  I could've used Johnny Angel's magic fingers.  Sigh.  But I've got 6 days to go and hopefully there will be decent progress given I'm using the balance board every night.  Since we've added an extra workout day, I find I'm less obsessed with calorie burn.  I mean 400 is my absolute minimum but if I feel like I've had a good workout, I'm happy with that.  I am looking forward to being able to do a few of my favorite moves from some workouts but I don't think doing ridiculous plyo or crossfit will ever be in my future.  I would've felt like a failure before but now I'm just grateful I can do anything given I was laid up completely at times during my recovery.  I don't need to be crazy exercise girl to be successful.  I'll never do a WOD or Insanity and I think I've made my peace with that.

It's been a pretty good food week on the yum front.  Let's eat!

Thursday was Valentine's dinner and we usually have steak.  It used to be at a steak place but we're both curmudgeony and cheap and I like to control the sodium that close to a weigh in day so I made top sirloin and my first attempt at what I call "fancy pants potatoes."  I know they're technically called hassleback potatoes but I can't bring myself to call them that, don't know why and I prefer the term fancy pants anyway.  Calories:  559

I'm not a fan of Valentines Day...

...then I get a surprise like these


Okay, so maybe I like it a LITTLE.

I think what's more important is showing yourself a little love not just on this Hallmark holiday but every day.

Tonight to show myself a little love I'm gonna workout then take a nice long shower and do my hair mask that makes my hair smell all purty.  To show the Mr I love him, I'll make him a nice dinner that's a little more "meaty" than our usual fare along with a nice dessert that fits into our calories today.

Movie night reviews

Last night was movie night so I thought I'd give my review of them.  I'm hoping Thursday they have Sessions with Helen Hunt since they were out.  Why they only get one copy of some movies is beyond me.  Let's do this...

The Perks of Being a Wallflower



I kept hearing this was "The Breakfast Club" of this generation.  I was honestly a little apprehensive to rent it because I wasn't sure if I would compare it to The Breakfast Club the whole time or if...sigh...I would be too old to relate now.  We ended up really liking it.  It has a great soundtrack with some good 80's and 90's music.  Though we're not really sure what era it's supposed to be set in; that's pretty vague.  I will say the only thing that kind of annoyed me was Emma Watson's interpretation of how an American girl talks.  She kept crumpling her mouth up and doing these weird head gestures that got on my nerves a bit.  Paul Rudd and Dylan McDermott are in it as teachers and parents respectively which makes me feel old but I'm trying not to think about that.  HA!  Some people might find it annoying if high school antics and issues aren't your thing but trust me, there are some twists that punch you in the gut.  At the end, I cried like a baby.  Wouldn't you if you heard "I know these will all be stories someday and our pictures will become old photographs. And we'll all become somebody's mom or dad. [Um, not ALL of us but continue young man]  But right now, these moments are not stories. This is happening. I am here. And I am looking at her. And she is so beautiful."  Such a good reminder to live in the now.  Enjoy the moment, savor it because before you know it, it will be gone.

Robot And Frank



We both really liked the trailer for this one and have been waiting for it to come out for what seems like forever.  I love the curmudgeon in Frank and the innocence of the Robot pre-corruption.  It reminded me of Twiggy from Buck Rogers.  Oh crap did I just date myself.  What can I say, my dad watched reruns back in the day.  Susan Sarandon was really great in it but I love her in pretty much anything.  This was another one with a few great twists in it as well that had me in tears by the end but more because of Frank sharing the same health issues as a family member.  I find it very hard to watch anything with dementia related topics without getting weepy.  I felt like some of it was a little off about 3/4 of the way through but overall liked it and would recommend it.

Peer pressure averted...barely

This is my favorite yet most dreaded candy time of year.  I don't even need to say anything, you can just see why...



 

My two most favorite candies ever.  Though I am ticked at both companies for drastically reducing the size over the last few years and not copping to it and yet somehow the calories stay the same.  How the hell is that possible??  I digress.  It doesn't matter if you think Cadbury eggs are disgusting or you say you can get Reese cups any time of year so the egg doesn't appeal, put your two favorite candies in there and stop bein' a candy snob.  ;-)

This past weekend was our first "reduced" high cal day.  It wasn't quite the resounding success we'd hoped.  It was better than previous ones, yes but MUCH improvement could (and will) be made.  Sunday's are my worst day as far as feeling like I can't control my hunger.  I don't know if it's because I ate more hearty the day before and more than I'm used to in a typical weekday but Sunday is usually a day of "re-adjustment" back to previous eating habits.  It's the day my willpower is most tested and none more than this past Sunday.  We discussed my funk earlier in the day where I was depressed and saying I would be fat for the rest of my life and he said no, we just need to buckle down, etc.  He kindly offered to go to the store to pick up our produce for the week while I made dinner.  I was starving.  I mean like pain in the stomach starving so while I was making dinner I picked at about 4 oz of cantaloupe that was going to be trash when he came back if I didn't eat it.  It went a long way in filling that pit and stopped me from grabbing anything inappropriate like say the homemade "ice cream" sandwich in the freezer and telling the Mr we were out.  I was proud of myself for turning to fruit.  Since we had a little bigger calorie allowance for Sunday, I decided we could finish off the baked beans we had with lunch and I knew that would make the Mr happy plus it fit into our calories.  He comes home and unloads the fruit and as I turn back around in the top of the fruit basket I see...you guessed it, not fruit but a Cadbury egg and a Reese egg!!!

My mind went through a million scenarios and feelings at once.
"Oh my God, why did he get those!!?"
"I want to eat both of them, is that little effer really going to make me choose!?"
"I want to punch him in the throat."
"I could totally fit that into my calories, it's only 30 calories more than the sugar free pudding I was going to have."
"I want to eat both of them, is that little effer really going to make me choose!?"  Oh, did I say that already?
"Why is he doing this to me?  Did we not just talk 3 hours ago about being fat forever?"
"F*** it.  Pass the candy."
"No, don't pass the candy."
"I should punt you like a football."
"No baked beans for you."

He saw all of the emotions on my face, proclaimed himself "bad" and said we'd freeze them.  I told him no, I wasn't going to obsess over them.  He said he'd hide them and we'd have them some other time and bagged them up and I yanked it from him and threw them into the living room (we have a pass through) and said "too late, I've already seen them!"  He said he'd even take them back if I wanted him to.  I got dinner out of the oven and started crying and asked why he did that.  I know it's hard for him too and he gets weak just like anyone but we'd just talked about needing to do better and mere hours later he was contributing to the delinquency of a person with weak willpower.  I silently cried all through dinner wondering why the hell I was so weak.  It was here so of course I have to eat it and it fits in my calories so what's the big deal?

The big deal is I'd be breaking an hours old promise to myself to finally get my damn act together when we will have plenty of opportunities to eat this crap at Easter.  We give ourselves that day to have a 3 pack of eggs (regular for me, caramel for him) and some Reese eggs.  We don't need to graze on this crap throughout the season like we used to and I'm tired of giving those things that kind of power on non-designated days just because I can fit them into my calories.  Just because I can, doesn't mean I should.

"Take them back," I told him.
"Okay," he replied

He got up and took them back to the store.  I wanted there to be a lesson.  If you come home with them, your butt might be turning right back around and going back to the store then you have to look like a weirdo returning two pieces of Easter candy.

I know his heart was in the right place...doesn't make me not want to smack him any less.  We're at a weak point in our journey and if I have to be the bad guy for a while until we get our heads together then I'm just going to have to do that even though I feel pretty damn weak myself.  I'm not perfect, I failed a lot last high cal day but the next one will be better.  I'm done with this crap.

Lazy weekend recap

What a lazy, weird weekend.

I was itching to go to Whole Foods since we hadn't been there in a while.  But some of the pretentious snobs are a little precious for me to deal with when Aunt Flo is in town, so we chose to go Friday an hour before closing.  I didn't even know why I wanted to go and it's all the way on the other side of town.  We got there and took extreme pleasure in being able to leisurely look at the bulk seed and nut section.  It is usually teeming with idiots acting like they're bulking up for the apocalypse and time is of the essence.  This is of course until some weird older lady comes up, talking to herself and instead of saying excuse me just walks into the Mr.  We look at each other and said "apparently excuse me isn't in people's vocabulary anymore."  She just went on muttering to herself and whacking her big ass bag around like no one was in the vicinity.  I knew if staying out of jail was in the cards for me, I should probably move out of the section.  As we passed the cheese and wine section there were a bunch of middle aged people all hootin' and hollerin' at one of the tables there.  I was almost envious until I got closer and they began singing The Rolling Stones "Ruby Tuesday" and "American Pie" or something of that ilk very loud.  I looked at the Mr and loudly said "I'm so cool, I get drunk at Whole Foods!"  Yeah, Aunt Flo erases ANY thin filter I have.  Seriously, if my Friday night in my future is ever spent getting drunk at Whole Foods, smack me...hard.  More importantly, if any of your Friday nights are spent getting drunk at Whole Foods, the first step is admitting you have a problem!  I ended up getting some chia pasta and a low sodium pineapple sauce which isn't too impressive on it's own but is going to be made into a different sauce to serve the greater good.


Saturday was rest day and dang did we need it after our first week of exercising 6 days a week.  We went to an overhyped Italian restaurant that doesn't even deserve to be mentioned here for the first time.  They made a horrible first impression, their food wasn't very good and we've come to the conclusion that high cal meals are so hard to choose anymore because I'm such a good cook.  I'm not saying that to be conceited, I just mean I always walk away from a restaurant disappointed (especially new ones to us) and the Mr always says "yours is better."  Cripes man, can there be more than just a few pizza and burger places that we can rely on so mama can get at least ONE break meal a week.  I cook a lot, yo!  So that night I broke out the "weekend burgers" I froze a few days ago and we had those and if you follow me on Pinterest, I made those no fry fries.  I used 1/2 tbsp of good olive oil and 1/2 tbsp of Hawaiian sea salt and a sprinkle of black pepper.  The Mr said they had the perfect amount of crisp and were perfectly seasoned.  I would totally make these again if I was patient.  They really don't take much longer than my microwave potato wedges; maybe 10 more minutes and a little more babysitting.  You know you want some...


They tasted like what we call "fair/boardwalk" fries but not as drenched in oil.  Yum.

Sunday was a pure waste of a day other than our Paul Katami's Ultimate Kettlebell workout.  I was grumpy and hungry all day.  I just wanted to shovel food in my face from dawn to dusk...AHHH, Xanadu just came on!!!  "And now, open your eyes and see, what we have made is real, we are in Xanaduuuuuuuu"....sorry, where was I?  Oh yeah, I didn't shovel food in my face but the urge was mighty.  It could've been eating a 50 lb watermelon, it wouldn't have mattered.  I hate that feeling.

Now we've got a whole new week laid out ahead of us.  It's the Chinese New Year so it's like the 2nd clean slate for people who might've slacked on the first round of resolutions.  HA!  For now, I'll just make a weekly goal and that is, I'm hoping I can work my foot this week without much modification and by the time I go back to my follow up next week the doc can clear me.  While I'll miss my Johnny Angel, I must admit I won't miss forking over a very reasonable $40 every appt.

Weigh In and small non scale victories

Down 2.

I've gotta shake my head on that one because in addition to Aunt Flo being in the hizz-ouse, I'll come clean...we basically had 2 high cal days last weekend.  After our stellar sundae bar with friends, we had ice cream left.  Let's just say the chocolate ganache ice cream did not go to waste.  You ever eat something so good you just don't give a rat's ass how many calories are in it?  The little bit that was left after our second bowl got melted and all of the gross TJ's vanilla met the same fate.  We didn't cover it all in chocolate sauce, fluff and M&M's so I guess there's a small plus.

I was making a new nighttime snack on Monday and it required some leftover fluff (marshmallow cream) and there was one leftover graham cracker so I slathered it in fluff, had it halfway in my mouth and said "what the hell are you DOING!?", turned on the hot water and put it in the disposal and flipped the switch.  An hour later, I found myself randomly grabbing a single marshmallow from the hot chocolate supply in the pantry and thinking "ONE won't kill me and will satisfy that craving."  I put it up to the cupcake hole and again said "seriously!?!?  KNOCK IT OFF!!!!" and threw it back into the mason jar.  Small victories, people.  Small victories.

I suppose I should get a move on.

Grocery store run in and Food Journal Friday

After my chiro visit, I stopped by the grocery store. I loved it because it was about 10:45am or so and the store was filled with old people. Lots of old couples, little old ladies on scooters and a table full of old guys meeting for a cruller in the cafe. I must've had a dopey grin on my face as I was grabbing a new to me fruit and I noticed a little old lady smiling at me. I smiled back and said hello and she said "that's nice to see." I said "what's that?" and she replied "you grocery shop like anything is possible." I laughed and said it had been a while since I tried a new fruit and picking something out made me happy so I probably looked pretty silly since I tend to forget there are people around me. "Never lose that, dear!" she said walking away. How I wanted to hug her. Old people rock.

Here are some of the things I picked up...

I still sigh when I see the word Hawaiian on a food.  I'm not at all counting down to our vacay.
I've been missing basil and I'm hoping I can keep this bad boy alive long enough to transplant in the spring.

The new to me fruit that prompted the exchange with the lady at the grocery store.  Prickly pear cactus.

I made "weekend burgers" made with half 80/20 and half 96/4.  If we're in the mood for burgers on the weekend, this will be our new go to for a few months which will save us 500 calories between a meal of bacon cheeseburger and fries.  But I know our bacon has no nitrates, no extra salt is added, bun is healthy and fries are baked.
Now that I've made myself hungry, let's eat!

Sunday was sweet and spicy quesadillas  Chicken with picante and sriracha sauce and pineapple with TJ's mini cheddar chipotle bites. Calories:  505


Monday was garlic and herb baked tilapia over TJ's quinoa duo.  Calories:  416


Tuesday was the day I filled my weird fish stick craving (I haven't had them in like 5 years).  We had a serving and a half with 1 tbsp light miracle whip and grilled asparagus with a sprinkle of asiago.  Calories:  528


Wednesday I wasn't in the mood for a big production for dinner so that awesome TJ's ricotta spinach ravioli saved the day with a side of brussels.  Calories:  433


Thursday was fajitas with onions, arugula and red peppers with a side of brussels and half a prickly pear cactus.  The sign said the PPC had "intense berry flavor."  The sign lied.  There were so many seeds you couldn't spit them out if you tried and trust me, they would be uh..."unpleasant" when they showed up again.  Too bad, the flesh was tasty.  Calories:  556


Not really sure what we have planned for the weekend other than the Mr is taking a music class in the morning.  I'll have to see what kind of mischief we can get in.
