The rare two thumbs up

Last night we got in an at home circuit to kick some strength and cardio butt.  I feel like things are getting back on track but I can't wait to feel 100% again on the workout front.  I pee'd a LOT yesterday (sorry) so I know my bod is trying to let go of some of that sodium so that's a step in the right direction.

Last night was an exciting double feature movie night.  Oh yeah baby!  October has actually been a good renting month after a really dry summer.  Last week we rented The Heat (affiliate link)  (which if you know of my disdain for Melissa what's her face it will come as no surprise that we hated it) and The Croods(affiliate link) and we really liked it!  It was kind of a joke that we rented it because when we were in Traverse City, the State Theater was playing it on the weekend and I remembered we said it looked good in previews but the Mr denied it.  So every time we walked past it, I would look at the movie poster and we'd laugh.  But I'm glad we actually did rent it because it was original, cute and you don't need kids to like this animated flick.  So thumbs up on that one.

Let's get to last night's rents.  We had a rare two thumbs up double feature.

The Internship (affiliate link)  with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.  If you saw Wedding Crashers, think the same chemistry and honestly, the same bullshit spewing from Vince's mouth so if you can tolerate that, you'll be good to go.  If you're in your late 30's or above, it'll make you want to go punch some college students for the first two thirds of the movie, so there's that.  It's pretty much one big Google commercial but it's a good concept and good laughs from beginning to end.

The Way, Way Back.  (affiliate link) This is one that we feared we might be trailer duped on.  It's one of those independent deals with big names attached and that sometimes spells disaster for us.  Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Sam Rockwell and Maya Rudolph.  All I can say is...rent it!!!  SOOOOO good!  We were so pleasantly surprised by this one.  It has some great throwbacks to 80's summers and that feeling of the awkward kid trying to cut their own path in life.  Liam James was perfect as Duncan and Carell was the perfect douchebag...kind of a nice twist from the characters he usually plays.

Rented any good movies lately?

(This post contains a few affiliate links to some pretty good movies.  Should you buy movies or start your Christmas shopping through them, I'll get a few cents back to help keep this well oiled machine on the tracks.)

  1. It is so very rare to have 2 movies be good ones in the same evening. When I was watching Way Way Back I knew it was something special fairly early on and it did not disappoint throughout. I expected The Internship to be a dud for sure just because our first movie was so good but it too did not disappoint and I really enjoyed it and got into the whole story. Highly recommend both movies to anyone.

    1. It's definitely a rarity. I'm afraid we'll now have to go through a bad streak to find our next double thumbs up. It's just our pattern. I'd like to be proven wrong. :)

    1. It's not set in the 80's but we had a hard time deciphering that at first. From cars to soundtrack to video games to the overall vibe, it might as well have been set in the mid 80's. The Mr said it has a "Meatballs" vibe to it in some parts.

  3. I do not know of your disdain for Melissa McCarthy'S awesomeness. Do share. Or provide the links to the posts in which you've previously expressed your dislike. (BTW I totally love your blog and Melissa M so I'm not trying to be confrontational, just curious! LOL I'm sure that even though I disagree, whatever you shared was probably chuckle worthy/interesting)

    1. I don't think I've said anything more than I just don't like the tired, cursing, crude characters she plays. (And I'm no prude) It's the same character in every movie and you either like it or you don't. We don't.

  4. Yeah I get it and FYI I had absolutely no interest in seeing "The Heat". I hate when talented actors/actresses fall prey to crappy scripts. Or scripts that try to re-create the magic the actor naturally had in a movie that introduced us to their chops. I think she's talented and would love to see her in a role that's not so hacky. Case in Point: Identity Thief. C'mon! You know it's a crap script if I was bored with the likes of Jason Bateman on the screen. I've never seen her tv show. I have no idea if it's still on air...

    1. Everyone I knew saw that when it came out and just raved about it so I gave it a chance but it was just like "ugh, really. Saw this character in Bridesmaids" (which I also didn't like and it was primarily because of her) I just kind of feel like she's hanging her hat on the "crude" hook when I think she's capable of so much more. I've seen interviews with her where she was tolerable and it's like "why can't THAT person be cast in a movie?" It's almost like she's not giving herself credit that she can do more than that. She obviously making money off of it so she probably figures why change what's working.

  6. I agree that the Croods was great! We haven't rented anything for while, but there are several out there that we want to. Finally. After a long cold summer of crud.

I really liked her character on Gilmore Girls, but I haven't seen her in anything else so I guess I'm a little surprised she comes off that way in other roles.

  7. I want to see "The Way, Way Back"--love toni collette. The last thing we rented was "Mama" which I was perfectly in the mood for , but it was not truly remarkable. Being October, I am in "Fall movie" mode and I re-watch many oldies but goodies "The Village" (love this), "Sixth Sense", "Cold Mountain", "The Fog" (original 1970's version). and I watched this twice and a half this weekend "Gosford Park".
