Sofa shopping, 80's awesomeness and a lazy Sunday

What a nice weekend!

We got pretty much all of our cleaning done Friday night so we could have Saturday to do what we wanted before company arrived that night for my final birthday gathering.  We hit up a garage sale with nothing I could repurpose and went to another one that apparently sold out the first day.  We went to the mall and hit up Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware.  We were looking at the couch we've had our eye on for a few years and the lady offered to do up a quote.  When someone at a furniture store offers to give you a quote, that means the price on the tag is not what you're going to pay.  This was the beautiful couch we were looking at...

It's the Kensington in Fog Belgian Linen and me love it long time.  The $2500 price tag shot up to $4200.  It's a good thing I didn't open the quote when I was in the store or I would've shit a literal brick.  While I love Restoration Hardware, it's for people who don't need to have quotes done up.  The phrase "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" applies or at least "if you don't mind taking out a home equity loan."  If Restoration Hardware would like to change my mind by providing me with this amazing couch, I will likely take back everything I just said.  :-)

This now made my new mission to find an appropriate knock off.  I found one online pretty quickly at Kittles for $1400 and this is the one we'll likely be getting...

I will be honest, while it's very close aesthetically, you can definitely tell the RH one is super solidly made.  It doesn't really matter because they don't have the length we need, only 76" and 98" and we need 88-92" which is where Kittles comes in.  So when we're ready to purchase, that one in medium gray will be the winner winner tufted dinner.

When our friends came over we got to show off the new cars.  (They're car people so the Mr FINALLY got the satisfying reactions he'd been dreaming of.)  We had quite the spread of food, gabbed and then it was time to bust it out old school, yo...

For the uninitiated, those are called Fashion Plates.  They made being a kid in the 80's awesome.  Yes, you missed out.  :-)  The Mr was looking over them this morning and said it was funny because you could see everyone's personality in each one they chose and how they chose to color them.  That one is mine.  Very traditional poses but a splash of personality in the weird colors I chose.  The one my girlfriend chose was a sassy scantily clad lady with sparkles and leg warmers.  My friends' husband chose the tennis outfit and made it very detailed since he was an art major and drew a very lifelike penis beside it for good measure.  Hey, sometimes the 10 year old boy in us makes his way to the surface.  The Mr colored in the Speed Racer coloring book we have.  It was funny because we all were super chill after coloring.  I forgot how much it calms me and we're going to do it more often.

I was able to sleep until 9am for the first time in months yesterday which was AWESOME!  We sat out on the lanai and chatted for 2 hours.  We did Tae Bo, finished some leftovers for linner.  We got our showers, got ready for dinner (we had a gift card for this fancy pants restaurant and decided to go there) and then got our fruits and veggies for the week.  I have a friend coming over today and the Mr has training this week so our workouts will be later all week.  BOO!

What did you guys do this weekend?

  1. I had a great time this weekend. The food was great too. Still can't believe how much that couch was over what the tag said. How does a fabric choice add over 2K to the price?

As for the fashion plates. It was funny how calming it was to color. Now I have to find the boys' version of fashion plates that I had when I was a kid. It was just like fashion plates but with cars and you could design your car and color it in. I remember designing a car for my dad and expecting him to go out and buy it. LOL

    1. It was a great weekend and the couch thing was just insane. I don't know when we'll get the couch but I think it's gonna look quite spiffy...after we paint. *ducking*

I would love to find those boy version fashion plates for you! I bet you boys would have fun, no, I KNOW you would! :)

  2. *singing* Fashion plate, fashion plate, fashion designer! (at least, that's how I'm remembering the song)

Hee hee, peen. Now I'm wondering if someone somewhere made "adult" fashion designer, like those "doodle pads" featuring a drawing of a guy with a blank at the crotch so you can add the "doodle". If no one has made "adult" fashion plates, they need to.

This weekend? I sewed my butt off and it was great. I finished 11 stuffed toys for charity. Three mermaids and 8 ponies. I'm feeling all "oh yeah, proud!" over it still. That's a butt load of finishes for one weekend.

(funny you should mention couch shopping, I just bought a new couch a few months ago but only have part of it since my hubby decided to gut the room it goes into the and furniture delivery folks are stupid and didn't bring the whole thing--so we're making them wait on us now!)

    1. OMG, I can't stop laughing at the commercial! I don't remember that but it must've worked! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt-vS1DYbuQ

Congrats on getting all of those stuffed animals sewn up! I'm sure the recipients will love them!

Ugh, aren't furniture places the best? I remember not getting our current couch on time and having to entertain with a gamer chair, large pillow and bean bag! Sexy.

  3. That's an insane price difference on the couch. The knock off may not be exactly what you want, but it looks really nice and comes in the length you want so I'd call it a win.

Nothing much here this weekend. Saturday was all about errands and junk, Sunday was housework and I took the little gut to see Smurfs too. It was Smurftacular.

    1. Yeah, I wasn't pleased. I mean half a zoo could've probably sat on it with no issues but still man, shouldn't I get good sturdy quality no matter what I pay?

      Sounds smurfy!

    1. So do we. We don't like the tufting along the bottom of the first one. Plus remember the one they show for RH is actually this behemoth couch of 106" x 44" so it looks ridiculous. It would basically look exactly like the Kittle couch except with the tufting along the bottom since I don't have room for something that huge in our tiny abode. LOL

  5. Did your guest take his fashion plate home with him, or were you just too chicken to post the picture? Bwahahaha.

I did this and that this weekend. No fun outings since we're saving up our fun for vacation next week. Nothing spectacular like yours, just a couple of days with family and a few in Las Vegas. I did finish the first edit of my novel, and hope to put it in the hands of beta readers later today after I'm sure it has no compilation issues.

    1. Uh posting pics of penises on this blog would not bring the kind of attention one would like. Though I did seriously consider pixelating it!

Sounds like a perfectly awesome vacation to me!

  6. LOVE that Restoration Hardware couch. Never knew a couch could be so beautiful. I hope you won't be disappointed when you get the other one and continue to lust over that expensive one. This is similar to the feeling I worry I'm going to have when we pick up our new Bulldog puppy this weekend. Will I constantly compare her to Lola? Will I be happy with a new puppy or just wish I had the original????

    1. I think the price tag will keep me from buyers remorse. I don't care if unicorns deliver it and it floats on clouds for the life of the couch, nothing will get me to pay that price.

  7. I had those same fashion plates and I loved them!!

  8. That couch would not survive in my house (I have 5 boys) ... I remember Fashion Plates. I think I do actually have the car plates around here (having the 5 boys as I just mentioned) *Ü*

    1. If you have the 80's version of the car plates, you need to Ebay those babies and sell them to the highest middle aged man bidder!

  9. the couch is just lovely and such a nice color! Our sofa is on it's last legs, so me thinks it's time to bring the one up from the basement (it's a reclining couch so it's very heavy and awkward, thus why it's still in the basement!)

This weekend was a good one. We ran a lot of errands and then watched a lot of football. Also checked out an apple orchard we had never been to and the drive was just lovely. I'm off all week and have chores planned every week, but spaced out in a reasonable fashion so I still have time for some fun. And I just did my first day of the new Leslie Sansone video you recommended! It arrived on Friday and I was up bright and early to do the cardio portion. Tomorrow, it's strength training. I really liked it and the different moves...I'm completely uncoordinated but the dogs didn't seem to mind. =o)

    1. Thanks! Ugh, don't you hate knowing you have to drag up a big ol piece of furniture? Sounds like you've got a good plan for the week for a proper amount of work and play!

  10. And here I thought I was the only person to call a lunch/dinner Linner! :-)

I loved me some Fashion Plates as a kid!! AWESOME!!!

  11. Wow. I used to play with my Fashion Plates for HOURS. My dad worked at the newspaper office and always brought home the ends of the big rolls they used for the newspaper printing machine so I'd have more paper to use. They were tired of buying me tons of regular paper. ;)

  12. When a friend was in the hospital a few years ago, I included crayons and coloring books in the "care package" I put together for her. We had so much fun coloring away the afternoon. :)

I quit going in RH many years ago (Ethan Allen too), because it's so obscenely priced for the product.

  13. Bwahaha! I love the fashion plates--hilarious! I loved those when I was a kid. That RH couch is amazing, but the one you picked out is awesome too. We need a new one and man, they are so spendy. I'm used to IKEA furniture prices, so like over $500 and I start getting heart palpitations.
