That's-ah one huge-ah vat of sauce-ah!

First things first...

I hope everyone has a great holiday if you're celebrating.  Don't forget to keep the doggies locked up inside and maybe play some soothing music to help them through all of the extra noise!

On to business.  I asked this pizza place what ingredients they used for their pies and they actually told me but I couldn't get them here.  A friend of mine had a dealer close to her and she was coming into town so I asked her to pick up the 11 oz can I saw on their website.  What I was expecting would be similar to this size.

What I got was a little larger...

Let's do a comparison pic so you can fully appreciate the situation.

Yeah...that would be 6 POUNDS 11 ounces!!   And I had her get two!!  So we're swimmin' in sauce here.  I was ready to bust into it finally so last night we did.  When I opened it up it was pretty full, then I used 1 cup and that second pic is the "dent" I made in it.  Um...

So needless to say we had a LOT of sauce left that is now in the freezer!  But I told you that so I could tell you this.  The pizza I made with it was friggin' AMAZING.  First I altered my recipe for the maple chipotle biscuits and omitted the chipotles and did regular sugar in lieu of maple sugar and added fresh basil, oregano and rosemary.  I divided the dough into four sections and rolled them out into 8" circles, baked them for 8 minutes for perfect little crusts that you can make ahead and freeze when the urge for pizza strikes.
I took 1/2 cup of pizza sauce for each crust, 1/4 cup of Trader Joe's Swiss and Gruyere cheese and 1 tbsp of Trader Joe's Asiago, Romano & Parmesan Blend and then topped with 1 oz of pepperoni.  I put them in a 400 degree oven for 4 minutes then turned the oven to low broil for 4 minutes to get the pepperoni to curl up a bit on top.

Oh.  My.  Goodness!

This tasted exactly like one of our favorite pizza joints and it totally fit into our calories!  The Mr was blown away and I have to say I was pretty impressed too.  I'm not a big fan of thin cracker-ish crusts but this was thin, crispy and held up all of the toppings beautifully!  I've got 2 more in the fridge but I might make another batch to finish off my buttermilk and have them in the freezer for a weekend pizza craving.

So while we certainly can't have it every night, it's gonna be a delicious way to use up the vat of sauce taking up residence in our freezer.

Have you ever made a food faux pas like getting something WAY larger than you expected?  Any plans for the holiday weekend?

  1. Yumm! The pizza looks terrific - I'll try it as soon as we move.
That's our plans for this holiday, we're moving! I'm in Phoenix area and it's HOT (106+). However, we are on our way to Ecuador which will be so much cooler.
I will bring some sauce with me - thanks and Happy 4th.

  2. That does look fantastic. Pizza is one of my biggest weaknesses, and that totally looks like it would calm even my worst cravings. I'm not a huge fan of cracker crusts either, but I'm trying to "acquire" the taste.

It's so dry here that fireworks (even the public show) have been banned to we're heading to my folks' a few hours away.

    1. I know, I feel the same about those crusts but it's slightly more substantial I think due to the biscuit as the base. You'll have to give it a go and see what ya think!

Ugh, I remember going to the fireworks every year at Mt. Rubidoux and they'd start them and then the hill would catch on fire and that was that. *rolling eyes*

  4. Hokey Smokes, that looks AWESOME!!! Explain what you meant about "flipping it over" on the low broil...do you mean literally turned it upside down? It's early and I'm a little slow this morning... =o) I could seriously eat that every day and I doubt I'd get bored. So glad it turned out spectacular for you!!!

  5. The pizza really hit the spot and it kind of reminds me of that digiorno commercial where they think it's delivery. If you brought that home in a box I would not know the difference. It's that good and yet healthy enough that we can have it to "scratch that itch". So what if we have a sh*t ton of sauce!

  6. I just had a food faux pas. I do monthly delivery from Amazon and was looking to change up what I was getting. I struggle with breakfast and saw steel cut oats on the list so I thought I'd try it. I thought it would be a nice change when I couldn't figure out what to have before going to work. So I get 4 cans of it, only to find out that I need to either cook it for 30 minutes, stirring often or make it the night before! So much for a quick, last minute breakfast decision.

    1. Aww man! But I think you can do "overnight oats" with those. Put in your milk, almond milk, water, whatever in a bowl with the oats and then put them in the fridge overnight and they're ready. Here are some recipes from KathEats for them if you're interested!

    1. This is the official recipe for now since people's sauce and pepperoni is going to vary by region. I've added a pin it button by the last pic in case you want to pin it for quick reference in the future!

  10. Man oh man that pizza looks FABULOUS! So nice of the restaurant to give you the sauce brand! The faux pas I did was the first time I ever made baked beans I made two whole bags of beans! I didn't realize how MASSIVE they were going to be! We had a freezer full and I had to use every pot in the house to cook it all! Thankfully they turned out delicious and we had lots of preportioned beans for a quick side dish!
