Laptop fixed, mother nature's wrath and the cook in

First I have to say I'm happily typing along after having the Mr replace my defunct keyboard Friday.  The UPS man decided to wait until true "end of the day" and deliver it at 7:45pm Friday.   No Christmas cupcakes for you this year.

Oh, did I mention our garage door spontaneously fell down?  Yeah.  I got out of the car and kicked a huge bolt.  The Mr noted the brace holding up the left side of our garage door track was loose.  We couldn't work on it with his car under it so when he backed it out, it took down the whole left side.  Oh, it was pretty and we had a TON of things to do to get ready for company the next day so reconstructing our garage was not on the agenda.  He managed to get the brace back up and into studs so that's done at least but the spring is off the track and you could lose your limbs or your life if you try to do it yourself so we have to wait for the guy to call us back.  I'm assuming today.  If I haven't heard from him by noon, I'm calling someone else.

Along the same vein of "man plans, God laughs", our big cook out we planned with our friends was quickly turned into a cook "in" when so much rain came down that our sump pump kicked on.  Did I mention hail?  Oh yeah.  A big old hailstorm and then a nice steady rain for a while.  I said screw it and put the corn in the oven and grilled them up in there.  I had a 30 minute window with no rain to grill the burgers and chicken skewers before the next round of rain hit.  As I got further in, the wind picked up a bit.  Then it really kicked up.  The dark clouds were swirling around as if to taunt me.  As I threw the last chicken skewer on the plate, little drops began to fall.  I put down my metal spatula and screamed "you didn't beat me!  HAAAA!!!!" then ran inside before lightning struck me.  I was rushing around so much I didn't have time to take a pic of anything other than the potato salad I made earlier in the day.

They raved about the food and the male half said it was easily one of the top 3 meals I've made for them over the years and he'd pay $20 for that in a restaurant.  The Mr says that to me all the time so I asked him later if he asked them to say that and he said he didn't.  I was glad they seemed to enjoy it.  Oh yeah and chipotle butter on corn on the cob is my new favorite!  YUM!  It was a fun visit even if we did have to move it inside.  It was a double birthday celebration...his was the end of May and hers is today.  (Happy Birthday M if you're reading...I know you're not but still)  So I put some balloons up and we got them presents even though they're not really present people.  They seemed to like them and we all enjoyed our meals and dessert after the boys jammed on their guitars.  They announced the new puppy addition to their family so we've already bought the new "baby" some things to welcome him into his new extended family.  We were able to pass on the peapod puppy bed that we bought for our dog when we thought we were getting one.  He won't be able to use it for too long but it should make him feel nice and safe since it's kind of "cavey."

The next day I was ready to just kick back.  We went to an antique store where I had to snap this pic.

The *real* Burt Wonderstone?

I'm so excited to settle in and watch Dexter tonight with the Mr.  We always watch it the next night so we can re-watch it to see stuff we might've missed and not be up too late.   I imbibed a bit too much this weekend so I'm back on track this week.  I do not regret buying the lemonade and 2" brownie from the lemonade stand and the look on the kids faces when the Mr handed him a $10 for $2 worth of goodies and told them to keep the change.  The high pitched sound that kid made for 2 minutes was worth it.  A guy did that to the Mr when he was a kid and he always wanted to pay it forward and was glad to finally do it.

What did you guys do this weekend?

  1. Once again the weekend flew by. It was a whirlwind weekend with everything we ended up having to do in getting ready for the cook(in) and the extras that got added on like working on the garage door. At least we get a day off this week and can relax a little and enjoy some fireworks!

    1. Yes it did yet somehow the month as a whole didn't. Weird. Hopefully the guy doesn't try to upsell us on anything with the garage. I'd like to not pay an arm and a leg.

  2. I went to the farmers market Saturday and got my peas in a pod. I love this time of year! And after work last night I watched Dexter. Oh man this season finale is going to be GOOD!!

    1. Peas were out at the market by the time we got there or I should say ones you'd want to eat. Just watched Dexter since the Mr decided to telework to take care of the garage. I could not believe it! I'm still covered in chills! They'd better make this a great season since it's the last one. They really missed the boat the season after the Trinity killer.

  3. Oooh, a fellow Danger Girl--standing out in a storm with a metal spatula in hand!

I spent the weekend decimating my to-do list. Not fun, but it feels good having those items off the agenda.

    1. Trust me, I don't prefer metal with a looming storm but nylon would've melted under the 700+ degrees. :)

Glad you got your to do list whipped into shape!

    2. Not as much as needed...we wasted half a day in the hotel watching TV while they took a 4hour nap..same age as my parents but less active..we spend more time waiting while they nap and spend 3 hours at a restaurant...my parents are way more active..like going on 10mile hikes, eating because we have to..lol...but we are moving some so better than nothing...

    1. I actually gave the fill in guy some last year when he made a delivery last year but the regular guy does what we call a "chuck-n-run." You can imagine that doesn't make me a happy gal when breakables are inside. So yeah, unless he improves, no cupcakes for him! *stomps foot*

      Glad I can entertain. HA!

  6. I'm glad you've called a "guy" to come fix that garage door. A professor where I used to work (before I RETIRED), had just retired himself a year or two ago, and was trying to fix his garage door, when a huge spring (I think) fell on him, hitting him in the head, and took out his eye, narrowly missing killing him, he said. This guy has a PhD, so he is no dummy, even built his own airplane, but garage doors are best left to experts! He will be forced to live the rest of his retirement with only one eye, but at least he's alive! Beats this other prof. I used to work with, who retired about five years ago, only to die from a massive heart attack a month later. Now that is just sad.

    1. Absolutely. The last time we had a spring issue, the guy had us leave the garage because he said it was dangerous to be out there and said to never, ever attempt to replace a spring without a garage guy since they have the proper tools. So sadly I'm not surprised about the professor. There are some house projects that are definitely NOT DIY! As far as the retired guy, I hear that all the time! A lady at my old work had been there since they invented the wheel, gave her life to the company and when she finally decided to retire, she went for a check up, found out she had aggressive kidney cancer and was gone 6 weeks later. :(

  8. Gosh I hate being on the go so much- I miss days of your blogs- all caught up now! ;)
I'm glad you beat the rain and hail this weekend- we could use some if you want to send it our way- I am getting too old for the heat!
Loved the photos of your fun day out- except for the poor Mr...he did look pretty pitiful there on the bench.

  9. Aw, I love the story about the lemonade stand! That's so sweet. I would have been THRILLED at that when I was a kid--I don't think I ever made more than $5!

We've been getting a crap ton (that's an actual measurement!) of rain here too. It sounds like you still managed your cookout (er, in) though!

  10. Sounds like a lovely weekend for you guys! "Paying it forward" is so much fun isn't it! Those kids will be smiling for days to come. My weekend was busy with working 4 hours on Saturday and taking care of a bunch of errands. The hubs and I had some tense moments and I was really proud of how I handled them (because I knew he was standing on the "button" pusher good and long and I didn't take the bait). I went off and did my own thing and I got so much accomplished! He only has to work through Wednesday and has a long holiday weekend. I only have Thursday off, but that's ok. I'm taking two days off at the end of the month that are just for me to do whatever I want. I've had one day off this year, so I'm REALLY looking forward to it!

  11. That lemonade stand story is so awesome! The food you made sounds divine! I need to get cooking! After being on vacation, and it being hot, I am never in the mood to cook lately.
