Shoeing through the rut

The Mr and I are starting to feel very much in an exercise rut.  I've got a few DVD's on my wish list so I'm hoping I get one or more.  But what am I really hoping to get more of?  Snow.  Not just flurries but I'm talking a solid 6" base so we can get in a different form of exercise.

At the end of 2010/early 2011 the Mr finally got me out cross country skiing.  I hated it.  He loved it.  But snowshoeing?  That's more my speed.  I like my feet firmly planted under me with full control.  That should come as no surprise.  But the Mr is a gliding fool on his ski's and we were super bummed with our mild winter last year.  It's almost like the snowshoes I bought him as an anniversary gift were some kind of jinx.

The almanac is predicting a "normal" winter which is about 35" of snow.  As long as we can get a good base going so my metal spikes can penetrate the snow, we'll be good to go to kick our exercise rut to the curb.  If you'd ever told me I'd be into snow for sports and not just general tomfoolery, I'd have told you you were nuts!

Do you do or want to try any winter sports?

    1. Yeah, I am not a fan of that slipping feeling under your ski's but if I can dig my heels in and still burn 1000 cals, I'm good!

  2. Growing up in Northern Minnesota I liked the winter sports more that the summer ones. I learned to dog-sled (great exercise running with the sleds) and Curl. Of course x-country skiing was big because it wasn't as expensive as other types.
I wish tons of snow for you this year - enjoy!

    1. I've always wanted to try dog sledding but want to wait until I'm thin and dainty because I'd feel sorry for a team of dogs trying to yank this around right now! LOL

  3. When I was a kid I loved skiing. There's nothing like speeding downhill without fear of injury (at that age we're all immortal and never get hurt). I'm hoping to get back to the slopes this spring, but I'm also terrified that it might work out. It's been probably 20 years.

I like cross country skiing & ice skating too, but never had a chance to do them much. I think I'd like snowshoeing too. Where I live though little snowfall is the norm, so without traveling a couple hours (at least) there's not much in the way of winter sports.

    1. If I hate cross country skiing, I can't imagine how much I would hate going downhill! HA! I know people love it though and God bless 'em! I told the Mr if we don't get much snow this year we're driving somewhere that has it!

  4. I used to love cross country skiing as a kid, but as I got older (and heavier) it because waaayy too hard to ski. I had/have no balance and I just fall over. My balance is getting better, but it doesn't help the nerves any!

I never thought of snow shoeing though, I bet my husband would love it if I asked him to take me snow shoeing!

    1. Snow shoeing is pretty cool and good workout. I never thought walking in snow could burn so many calories!

    1. YAY! I'm not the only person that likes to shovel snow for the calorie burn! ;) I told a friend I'd come out to Jersey and help her shovel out of her Nor'easter snow!

  6. First of all... WOW! THis picture really shows how far the Mr. has come this past year! Wonderful to see!

...and, yeah, we're waiting for more snow to *stay*. We've already had three 6" dumps since the middle of October, but it all mealts in between... it's made for really interesting road conditions.

I like cross country skiing, but I really want showshoes for the whole family... they will be our family Christmas present from Santa this year (sshhh... don't tell)! I also like skating, but after my fall 4 years ago, I'm reluctant to get back on those...we'll see. My Mr. and the girl LOVE downhill skiing.

I'll be thinking about you when the next snow hits... right now I've been celebrating the functional strength training I get from clearing the snow off our considerable sidewalks (150 feet) and driveway... took me three hours this past Monday... and I have to lift/throw it over a 3-foot hedge the whole distance... good news is that the last four years I couldn't do it. Yea, me!

    1. I know, I thought the same thing when I saw that pic! (I made him get rid of those baggy jeans!)

What a great family activity to do this year, I can wait to hear about your adventures! You've gotta have some guns shoveling all of that stuff. It's just beginning baby!

  7. Sounds like fun! We never get more than a few inches of snow where I live, so we are lucky if we even get to go sledding! Someday I would love to go to Colorado and attempt to ski though!

  8. Growing up we used to get A LOT of snow and were snowed in all the time. My parents bought us cross country skis and we would ski up and down the fields behind our house (1/2 mile lengths). I miss that. I have friends that want me to learn to downhill ski. I'm scared that I'll fall and break my leg or worse, fall and not be able to get my fat behind back up! LOL!

    1. I'm terrified of downhill skiing and have no desire to learn. HA! You should get out there again on the nice FLAT trails. ;)

  9. It's not a sport, but I loooooove sledding. I suppose it counts as exercise since walking back up the hill can be quite a task. I also love ice skating, which is a great workout for the legs.

I learned to ski when I lived up north, but I never got past the bunny hill. We've been talking about moving to Albuquerque next summer, and if we do, I might take lessons once the Sandias have a base.

    1. Hey, I say anything that requires you to not fall off of something and trudge back up a hill qualifies!

  10. I've only been snowshoeing once, but I enjoyed it, and you know I love to hike! I'm hoping we get enough snow on the trails this year to put a pair of snowshoes to work that a friend gave me, top quality and never used, it's a shame not to use them. But my Yaktrax, that I used last year when I hiked in snow that wasn't deep enough for snowshoes, have apparently taken a hike without me. I can't find them anywhere!

    1. That would be awesome to be able to get out there. Winter time doesn't mean you have to miss out on hikes! Hopefully the Yaktrax show up before you need them!

  11. I have never been skiing or snowshowing, but I love sledding--does that count? :D Of course, now that we're in the south, even if I wanted to do winter sports, I probably wouldn't be able to.

  12. My friend and I were just talking about snowshoeing today! I don't have any, but there's places around here that you can rent them. I figure it'll be a good way to get outside and not have to worry about falling down in the snow.

  13. I'd like to try snowshoes and skis at some point, but considering we average about 3" of a snow per year, it's not likely to happen soon.

But I shall wish VERY hard for snow for you this year! (Let me know if it starts piling up too much and I'll turn off the wishes. :) )

  14. I snowshoe and cross-country ski (and occasionally downhill ski but that's not too often any more) Over the years I have experienced exactly what you referred to: if I get my hopes up about winter activities, it doesn't snow!! And you know what? That's OK with me!! (I really REALLY dislike winter!)

  15. I've never been skiing ever, and now that I have a back injury I'll never be able to go. I can't say that I'm super sad though...snow is *NOT* my thing!
